This isn't really 400ex specific, but it is regarding a thread a bunch of us had going in here a couple of months ago about tires for an ex.
I had complained about how bad my new ITP front wheels wobbled on my ex. I thought, along with others, that it was from going from a 2 to 6-ply tire.
Well, after having my forearms beat to death for the past couple months, I finally decided to try some different tire/wheel combos.
Long story short, I took the Dura-blue spacers off and placed my ITP's back on...HUGE difference! HUGE!
I guess with having the wheels extended out that additional bit beyond the pivot point causes the wheels to have that extra leverage to drive the handlebars and front end crazy.
So, for all those thinking about buying front wheel spacers, I would definitely spend the extra $$$ and buy the arms instead.
