ok, like title says, im lookin' into getting a truck. i def. want to be practical with gas prices and such but i dont wanna be rollin' in junker. how much more would it cost to run a V8 over a V6? and for now lets just PRETEND price isnt an issue.

Which 450?

If you want to be practical with gas, a truck shouldnt be an option, they are all pretty bad. A v6 wont save you but a few mpg, if you plan to tow at all, you should get a v8. Ive towed with both. My s-10 with a v6 pulled better then a fullsize with a v6.

well when i say "practical" i mean practical for a truck, i know they dont get the greatest milage.

Just get yourself the V8, they will both such anyway.

My 98 Frontier is a 4 cylinder and it gets 24 mpg.

With the higher RPMs a V6 runs at Vs. a V8 it doesn't make much difference in MPG.. And a V6 won't have as long of a lifespan..

I have a single cab short bed, 4.3 4x4, and with a trailer with 4 quads on it , i get 16 mpg, i have plenty of power, and my friend with the 4.6 v8 stx ext cab, cant keep up when were both empty. Its the best truck ive ever driven. i would say anything over what im towing with, like a large camper or soemthing, get the v8 but for most regular things, my v6 has what it takes for the most part. Not to mention, I get 23 mpg, with an edge prgrammer, full exhaust and intake.,. and thats having fun.

Practical is not a word I understand. I just bought a 2006 F250 diesel recently, and I don't plan on towing a single thing with it...

I get 15mpg no matter what, no matter how hard I drive, at what speed, in town, on the freeway, different tunes on the programmer, just doesn't matter.... 15mpg!

I don't know how to say this without offense, but I dislike people like you:p .

I drive a '96 Sonoma ext cab with the 2.2L 4 cylinder 5-spd. I used to get close to 28 mpg all the time but now I've been lucky to get 23. I do know my catalytic converter is clogged.

It really depends on how often you're going to be really using the engine. If you're not going to tow that often or haul a lot of stuff around I'd go with the V6. If you plan on towing a lot then go with the V8.

^^^ because your cat is clogged thats why ;)

also yea if you dont plan on doing a lot of hauling, get a v6. I mean unless you plan on seriously racing this truck then i wouldnt get a v8

yea the most i plan on doing is hauling my quad so a V6 is sounding about right.

I have a 93 Dodge D-150 pickup. Short wheel base, standard cab with the 360 magnum EFI engine...

As long as I keep my foot out of it, i can maintain about 17 mpg.:)

You just gotta drive like you have a brain.

haha, I just got really sick of not being able to beat a single thing at the stop light. My last truck was a 97ranger, I didn't see the point in the smaller trucks anymore when this gets the same mileage and has a ton more room and oodles of power. Plus there truly is nothing cooler than clouds of black smoke at the stop light

I now have an 04' Ford Supercrew with the 5.4. It has true duals and a cold air intake. I get 14 mpg. But its got room for 2 car seats comfortably (geez i am getting old).

But the truck i would suggest would be a mid 90's ford f150 with the straight6. I owned one of hese and i got good gas mileage (around 20) and the thing ran forever. I never had any problems with it, changed the oil and it ran very well. I put well over 200,000 miles on it, and only sold it cause i had no room for the kids. Just my 2 cents.

I have a love hate relationship with ATV's

I love to ride and enjoy spending time with my family, but i also dont want to spend 20g on a toy hauler and have to get a 40k truck to tow it all. I am gettign too old for tents ( will someone buy me a lotto ticket?)

I agree, my buddy just sold his with something like 250K on it still running great, just needed a clutch and he didn't want to do it. Very solid trucks, and they're still a large motor even for a 6. 301 I think, or 300? I get it confused.

GM's 4.3 V6's last forever too. We've got a '90 S10 with 250k on it and it still runs like a top, even after being totaled. Just doesn't drive straight:D . Our '94 Bravada has about 220K and still runs great besides the EGR needs to be cleaned and the TSU (Temperature Sending Unit) needs to be replaced.

The newer style blazers and S10's and more specifically the ZR2 ones were rated as one of the worst used vehicles to buy! The motors are good though for sure.

My dads gotta 07 F150 extended cab 5.4 v8 4x2 and gets 19-20 mpg to work everyday. My brother has an F150 extended cab 4.2 v6 4x2 and gets 18 mpg and its so slow.

Also the Ford 300 I6 motors are known to last over 500,000 miles.

My 6 cylinder ranger got around the same mileage as my 7600lb 400+hp F-250.

If you get 4x4 auto 6 cylinders, they will use the same amount a fullsize V8 uses.

I traded in a 1999 S-10 Extended Cab ZR2 with the 4.3 V6 (a known gas hog) for my current, 2005 Nissan Titan Crew Cab with the 5.6L V8. My experience thus far:

4.3L V6 = 16 mpg
5.6L V8 = 14 mpg

Keep in mind that the S-10 had 31" tires(the stock size) and my Titan has a 6" lift and 35" Tires. I was averaging even closer to 16 mpg with the Titan, prior to installing the lift and tires.

I have a heck of a lot more truck now and am only doing 2 mpg worse than before. It's been well worth the tradeoff IMO.

As you stated before that f-250 is a diesel motor and not a v8 gas motor, which of course a diesel will get around the same as a v6.... :tired:

Don't forget to factor in the added cost of insurance/registration when you move into a larger truck as well!!! The difference can be significant

Why do you say that? I was just stating my personal experience with my older OHV V6. I get 15mpg. Certainly there are V6 motors out there with better mileage. When I looked around before buying this, I looked at brand new toyota tacomas and the auto V6 Long bed 4 door avgd 21mpg highway.

An older used V6 with older technology will get less mileage for sure.

Also note my dad drives an 04 f150 with the 5.4 ext cab, 4x4 auto with fx4 package, he avgs 16 city and has gotten as high as 20mpg on a trip from NY to Virginia and from NY to Indiana. I get 15mpg no matter what, where I drive, how fast I drive, what tune I'm in, what I'm towing (though it hasn't been anything more than 2000lbs yet) or for how many miles on drive on anything from country dirt roads to the thruway.

I'm driving a new 2007 silverado ext cab with the 5.3 V8 active fuel management motor... i got 3.73 gears and drive pretty normal... also i have a tonneau cover

on the highway i'm gettin 25mpg 23mpg witout the tonneau
around town start and stop constantly it'll get 12mpg
driving on country roads and not stopping i'll get from 18 to 23 depends on the hills...

if u can keep the truck in 4cly mode alot ur gas mileage will sky rocket...

my 05 with the 295hp 5.3 ext cab and 3.42s was gettin 17mpg regular driving and 19 on the highway... no tonneu cover...

i have an 01 5.4L f-150 4x4 with 33's and a 3 inch body lft and i never seem to be able to get better than 15 miles to the gallon but i will always have a 4 wheel drive truck no matter what...

The difference between 6 clinder and 8 clinder in gas is like a mile or two a gallon not a big difference....
