My 416 is broken in now but I think the jetting is off. It runs ok but is not that much faster than stock. My plug looks good but It is leaving tons of carbon on my six pack rack. It did not do this before and I wonder if I have it way to rich. I ran a 50/50 mix of race gas and premiem to break it in and now just 92 octane. I have tried 170 and 172 regular jets and a 170 dynojet jets and the same result black deposits everywhere.
What do you think???
I am at sea level and ride the dunes mostly. Bottom end is ok but it bogs climbing dunes .
I have tried the stock needle and a dynojet needle, moved the clip both ways and it's still does not seem right. I hate Jetting.
I also had mild porting done if that matters.
One other thing is it runs much better with the lid off.
416 owners please help!!!!!

So it runs bad with the lid on, and great with it off? I think the answer is obvious.

sounds like your jets are way too rich for runnin with the lid on.

I agree--way rich. I have the lid off and run a 158 main (keihin jet) with similiar mods.

I would also check your air filter.

i am running a JE and stage 2 with a full e-series pro-meg, no porting though.

170 main(stock main jets from dealer)
2nd clip from bottom of needle(1 down from stock)
42 pilot
no choke
6 uni vents in stock lid with stock airfilter with baffle removed

I am a little rich now up top, think i need a 168 main cause it ran perfect then. but it is about 40 degrees out now, at sea level

for those of you who are weary of removing the choke in cold weather. mine starts and idles a+, 10 times easier than with the choke, it would always gargle and pop for the first min. i just pump it 3 times then hold the throttle as soon as i starts for about 10 sec at 1800 rpm(i have a tach) and it idles perfectly after that

i am using a 170 Dynojet & needle (3rd clip), and the stock pilot. I have removed the airbox, and that seems to be just right for Dumont. Try something around 165ish & see what happens. & make sure your air cleaner is clean :)

Oh yeah, if all else fails, you could buy a C-dale :blah

Thanks Guys. I wish I could afford a C-Dale. But I can't. I will just keep plugging away on this. Next summer I think I will try to build it into a monster, Maybe a 465 stroker with all the bells.
I think this weekend I will drop in a 165 dynojet main. Do you think I should keep the stock needle or put the dynojet back in? I switched back to stock when I put the 172 in.
While I'm at it I will remove the choke and grind the welds from the header.

Well I have one 416 with a je 10.8:1 and hotcams stage 2, minus the porting. We run a full sparks x6 with the bike and are runing in the Pismo dunes, which you know is sea level. The stock carb set up that was right on was stock needle one notch down from stock, a 165 main, air fuel screw two and a half turns out, and a stock pilot jet. This setup is with the 50 50 unocal 76 race 110 octane gas and 91 octane pump gas. It seems to be right on from bottom to top, oh and this is with no airbox lid and a K&N filter with outerware.

My 416 was a very similar setup. I had porting and polishing and stuff too but I ran a 170 in mine and it ran great!
