Hi Guys,as you will see this is my first post but I think I've read nearly ALL the previous threads:eek2:
I'm after some information about fitting the Keihin FCR to the EX,Anyone done it??,what size carb??,what bike/quad was it off??How hard to fit??,was it worth it??.
I realise that some things have probably been covered in other threads but I really fancy trying this conversion.
Thanks and look forward to your knowledge
Tooney.

The easiest FCR carb to fit to the 400EX is the Sudco version. It has adapters that can be fitted to adapt to about and bike. They make special ones just for the 400EX. You can find them used for 200-300.

BUT IMO they are not worth it. I paid over $500 for a new one and my 400EX never really ran correctly. It is finicky to tune. Once they are tuned they are awesome. But I had trouble getting it to run decent. My 400EX felt flat at 3000-6000 RPMS. It also suffered some deto under heavy throttle loads (I think this was due to the accelerator pump squirt and duration).

I sold it for $300, then bought a BRAND new '05 450R carb for $175. The install of the 450R carb was quite involved, but once I got it installed and baseline jetted, it run MUCH better. I'm very happy with the way my 400EX runs now.

Here is my write up for the 450R install

Thanks for that info and the great link,
Is the 05 450 carb different from other years??and are there any I should avoid?
My ex is standard bore, with the Sparks timing key, stage 2 hotcam and ART slip on,Do you think that the 450 carb will still work OK with this set up??

Thanks for that,Whats the difference with the 450r timing chain over stock 400ex??
What year was your carb from??,why did you need the yfz cable instead of a trx one??
Sorry for all the questions:rolleyes:

Only use the '04-'05 450R carb. The '06 and newer are not hte same design.

And I think the 450R carb would be a good addition, considering your mods.

I'll bet he is running the CRF 450 timing chain. Very common upgrade and it is cheaper!

The throttle cable you need is the 450R cable, not the YFZ cable.
