what about a new axle (or wheel spacers) or new rims and smaller tires?

Smaller tires just make it harsher

He's got the right idea, all the 400ex needs to be waken up is an HMF slip on, better flowing airfilter and jets.

Get some 450r shocks off ebay. For MX that will be your best investment for your money. The first time you go of a 30 foot table top you will see how bad stock shocks suck. And as far as the engine goes X2 on getting a slip-on, air filter, and jets.

wheels/tires, sprockets, handguards, and a nice set of bars. most can transfer to the new bike, and very helpful in mx

you might want a 14t front sprocket. the bottom end comes in hand in those tight corners.

i was planning on getting new sprockets and a new chain soon, but i dont know to much about what to get. what is the best brand and how big should i go? also is it hard to put them on, you dont have to take the rear axle out do you?

its very easy to do. and contrary to what people will tell you. you dont need expensive sprockets, and you definetly dont need an expensive o ring chain.

i run 15$ sprockets and a 25$ chain. i replace them at MOST once a year... could easily get 2 years or more out of them.

if you really want mx a 13 front and 35 rear will be good, but most go with a 14 front and 35 rear. i have the 14 and enjoy it because i like top end too. 13 is more bottom end.

If your planning on upgrading to a 450r in the near future, i would not waste much money on the ex. Hardly anything you put on it will help the resale value, so it's somewhat a lost cause. For the minor performance gains for most cheap mods its hardly worth it. With the excepetion of wheels, tires, bars, as said and maybe a steering stabilizer?

I would not waste the money on motor mods if you plan on selling it. Best thing to do is spend as minimal as possible and just save that to get a 450 sooner. Still race the ex though, the experience will defeintely help out when you get a 450 and it will just make it seem all that much better!

Also when i raced mx i dropped the countershaft sprocket a tooth and it really helped with the bottom end powering around the track. About as cheap a mod as you can do with major benefits. You don't need to replace both sprockets unless they are wornout. Simply changing the front will do just fine..
