View Full Version : how much $ for a 265 motor?

How much am I looking at for a well built 265 motor? I think ill run that and get used to the power then save up for the 330p/v.

With your bore, you aren't that far from a 265 now. If it were me I would go ahead and build the 330 pv if that is what you have your mind set on. In the end you will save money not having to build the motor twice.

However, if it were me, I would build a 310. I am very pleased with my 310 and liked the fact that you don't have to go to the expense of having the cases machined for the 330. They make a bolt on 330, but from my research it is not as reliable as the 330 that requires machining the cases.

well here is the deal so far, i friend of mine has an 05 yfz 450 engine sitting at his house. It has 13.1 compression piston and hot cams in it, also has a 41.5mm carb for one. He wants $600 for all of it. Now another guy I know has an 88 trx 250r motor with an ESR 310 kit on it and a bunch of other goodies for possibly $1000, ill have to talk to him again. Now a hybrid would be a blast to have but would it be better in yall's opinion to just get the 88 trx motor instead of the yfz engine? I know the yfz will have a lot of fabrication that has to be done to it but I have someone who works at a machine shop and can make all the pieces for me :D

I bought my R with the unported pro-x 310 kit already on it. This is the first R I've had, so I couldn't tell you how much more power it makes over stock. I'm very pleased with the power other than it lacks on the bottom end a little. I know once it's ported it will be a great all-around motor. Long story short, I think you'll be more than happy with a 310 over a 330, plus you'll save yourself some case machining.

I think the YFZ would be a ton of work. Does it already have the kicker? If not your also looking at mounting a battery and the copious wiring, etc. OR your looking at another 300-400 bucks for the kicker and installation.

I have always liked the idea of a hybrid, but haven't ever been able to justify the work or cost. When I want the four stroke torque I ride my Dale. I guess my point is, if you want a four stroke, just buy a production quad. Probably just as cost effective in the end and likely more reliable. The hybrids with bike powerplants make some great power, but they aren't cheap either.

I think you will be happy with the 310. It makes alot more power than a stock jug. My 310 is night and day compared to my former Rs, both of which were stock jugs but with extensive motor work. My 310 is a ripper. I have ridden a 350pv quite a bit. Obviously it made more power (especially low end as my 310 is not a pv) but I don't feel I need that much power.

Long post longer, try and ride a 310 and I think you will be happy with it.

i have no clue if it has the kicker or not, I would go the kicker route to keep the extra weight off. I would love to have a ltr-450 (only 450 i really like) but i know it will not handle stock for stock like my 250r will, thus the reason for wanting a hybrid. I think I may just stick with the 310 and go from there. I plan on buying a 4 stroke when im out of college so the 250r will have to rip as hard as them for now!

Yeh, 310 will pull you good. I know a guy who put a 310 in his and couldn't handle it in the woods so now its a drag bike.

And all yfz's are electric so unless he put a kicker in it which I don't know why he would you'd have to install.

If you have ever owned an 04 or 05 YFZ that has a high compression piston you will understand why a kicker is desired. Those years had known charging problems. The resistor kit helped as did running the lights all the time, but mine still needed the battery charged from time to time. Also, those batteries struggle with the task of cranking the high compression motors. This is why several people have added the kicker. They aren't cheap, but are very nice when you are miles from camp, at the bottom of a gourge, and the battery is dead.

i may just buy the yfz motor to have it on the side for a future yfz build. I enjoy building them from the frame up and the yfz will be 1000x easier to build from the ground up than my 250r. Just will cost a little more

If you are buying a well built 265 but have to save up for a 330 p/v, how are you going to buy the yfz motor and just have it sitting around? If you can do all this just get the 330 and have some good thumb to brain control to get used to it and be done with it.

the same guy that has the yfz motor has everything else but a frame so ill most probably be buying it all from him for a very very cheap price. If i can do that im going to build a yfz 450 and get a cheaper motor for my 250r. I have enough money to buy a 310 motor for my 250r for a reasonable price and the yfz 450 engine and carb for $600

I see. I was just thinking that I wouldn't pass up the chance at a 330 p/v to have a spare 4 stroke sitting around. But if you got plans of two complete fourwheelers then more power to ya. :D

lol, trust me id love to have a 330p/v but if i can get 2 quads going and have both a 4 stroke and 2 stroke then im going to do it. I can probably get all the stuff from the guy with the yfz 450 motor for about $1600 or so. Hes a good friend of mine and he got out of rebuilding his 06 yfz so he just wants it gone and he always sells me stuff cheap :D
