After hearing a clunking sound and having a loss in power on the 450 we tore it down only to find shavings on top of the head. We pulled the oil filter and it was basically full of brass colored shavings. I am sure this major, if anyone has had this happen and knows what it is please help.

thanks

sounds like your crank and bearings are f****d. you need to rebuild the bottom end probably.

that is what we were thinking, do you know what would make them wear out

Thanks

well the 450rs have a tendacy to blow crank bearings, what year is this, the 04/05s are more likely to lock up.

Not changing the oil often enough.

yeah people dont understand. quads rev at 6000 7000 normaly wear a car revs to 2000 or maybe 3000 normaly, so that tells you how much faster the oil is going to break down. I get 3 hours on oil and thats it.

I change my oil around ever 1 hour or less, and my rod bearing still went out on mine... I dont really think there is much that can be done about it...

I like my Honda enough to live with it....

i have a bmw with twin turbo tuned, it revs to 7400rpm and im there alot of the time. bmw tells me to change the oil every 15,000 miles, yes thats right 15,000 miles.

oil changes will depend, on the type of oil, type of riding, and the mods done to the engine(HP)

people forget its a twin sump system, like a car, the engine oil is seperate than the tranny oil.. it stays cleaner longer..

and saying the oil looks black is not a good testament to its time for a oil change, but u can do it that way, engine oil gets black from constantly being rubbed agnist metal..

ever try to polish metal? what color does the polish turn into after a while. black!

There really nothing u can do with the thrust washers and crank bearing going, just rebuild before it happens and after it does. get the updated parts and all.. and recommened high grade moly or synthetic oil, and change depending on your mods and type of riding.

Thanks for the help. That is all what we figured. It just seems odd that we just changed the oil in it, before the last dune trip and it was during the trip that it toasted.

Next question is the best place for oem or aftermarket parts and I guess it is time for a bigger bore.

Thanks again
