well, i am getting ready to sell my 300 and hopefully buy a 400ex. i wanted a 450 but i definitly cannot afford one. i have about 2000-2200, can i get a decent 400 for that price? i have looked, but i seem to see either 99-02 400s with newly rebuilt engines and aftermarket parts some with 440 kits, from 1700-2200, and i was thinking that is a great deal until i see the beat to hell 400s stock 400s with a 2500-3000$ asking price. whats the deal? i know kbb says 1600-2000 for a 99-03 400 completely stock in good condition.

you can't go by KBB

you'll be lucky to find a good 400ex under $1800-$2000 in average condition around here...

it can be done. just kind of hit and miss on here. check ebay to see if anything is close. or else keep your eyes on the for sale threads. i got my 2002 mostly stock 400 for 2200. it was a great quad. now i have my 2004 and got it for 2700. price ranges alot for these quads.

Completely stock should mean completely stock... not after market tires... Anyone who saying something like that I and see something off makes me wonder...

And most of the time you get what you pay for. Just keep looking till you find something you like, or you'll just be mad at yourself for buying something you shouldn't have, even if it's all you could afford.

i have a 99 400ex. new piston/rings .40 over pro-x, new cam chain/tensioner, new rear axel bearings/brakes. all in the past month. good rubber on tires good plastic little hole in seat on the "no passenger sticker". needs an exhaust valve. has ben ported and polished. asking $1000. i live in northern michigan it would have to be picked up. any questions email me at versdevil@yahoo.com. hate to get rid of it but gotta get rid of the payment.

Have patience and watch Craig's list and Cycle Trader. Here in Southern California, the lowest you'll find is usually $2500... BUT, occasionally a $2000 pops up, and is worth looking at. BTW, the best time for good prices is just after the season ends... worst is just after the start.

Good Luck!

A little picky aint you? I have never bought a fourwheeler based on what kind of tires or the condition of them. I have twice now bought fourwheelers without wheels and tires simply because the people thinks it makes them worth that much more to have new wheels or tires. I just brought four wheels and tires with me and brought it home. When I go look at buying one I start asking what will you take for it without wheels and tires, exhaust, bars, bumpers whatever its got that they think makes it worth more and especially if I dont like it.

tires don't count in the completely stock equation. i have seen a person slice the sidewall of a rear tire on the second time out. why get a replacement stock tire when you can buy two better tires for nearly the same price as a stocker.

but back to the topic. be patient. someone will have something good somewhere. when i bought my 400ex from lonestar_R, he gave me a good price at the time. if it were the same situation today, i would not bring the bike home.

thanks for the offers guys but i am looking for something a little more local, i dont really want to go more than 50 or 60 miles unless it is a great deal. lately it seems like they are poping up 1400-2000 and many with 440 kits. i have not looked at any of them because i need to sell mine first. as the weather gets colder and people dont have anywhere to store them the price gets lower and lower. while thats great for buying them selling mine is definitly not getting any easier. i had it listed at 2200 for a while hoping someone would offer 1800 or 2000, i got 2 offers, one for 1600 and one guy told me i could give him my 300 plus 800 for his 99 400. i also found a 88 250r that ran but it needed restored for 1500, i kind of like the sound of that.
