400ex choke problems

My 03 400ex has a problem. When I add gas with the choke on, its good. But when I turn the choke off, I will try to add gas and it dies. What can the problem be?? Thanks for your help.

sounds like the carb and jets need to be cleaned. could need the fuel screw adjusted also.

Did this problem occur after the quad sat for a month or more? Gas evaporates out of the carb and leaves behind gunk which clogs the valves, jets and passages in the carb.

A good cleaning will take care of this. Before long term storage, turn off the gas and idle the engine till it dies. This will eliminate a repeat of the problem in the future.

This happened after I took the float bowl cover off. ;/ It dies without the choke on.

Then we need more information... for instance, what led you to take the float bowl off in the first place? Without a full chronological description of the symptoms and the work done it's very hard to find the problem.

After I took the carb off the quad, i put it upside down and unscrewed the float bowl cover. I just sprayed carb cleaner onto the parts and let it dry. I didn't remove any of the parts, i just left them as they were. Then I screwed back the cover, put it back onto the quad, and put all of the tighteners on. Thats all.

Why did you take it off? What where the symptoms that led to this? Did they change afterwards? etc., etc., etc!

So it now works normally, (don't need the choke), but after checking the new spark plug, it was black(i know that it burns oil), but there also were these solid particles on it. What would be the cause? Also, how should I adjust the pilot screw. It has a K&N, 165 main, and a white bros exhaust. THanks

WTF, ran normally yesterday, now its doing the same thing as before. Starting to piss me off. ;(
