my question is this, would it be more beneficial(sp) to get an 11:1 comp piston or a hotcams stg. 1. dont have the money for both so im pickin' one for now. thanks.

Save your money up and get a full exhaust before a cam or piston. There are some "budget mods" listed on the trx450r.org forum you may want to check out. You're not going to notice hardly any more power out of either the cam or piston.

piston will give you more lower end cause its a higher comp while cam would give you top end and possably take away some low end, but you probably wouldnt feel the loss. you also need a free flowing intake/exhaust for it to reach its performance potential.

hot cam stage 1 adds throttle response and torque. m brother had that and you could deffinately feel a difference. Then he added the hig compression piston later on and the 400ex didnt bog really in any gear in combo with k&N w/o the lid and hmf slip on. I say go with a cam if you have to choose 1 or the other

Look at it this way:
If you do the piston first, the cam will be as easy as popping off the rocker cover and removing the cam gear.
If you do the cam first, you'll have to take everything apart, including the new cam stuff, to get to the piston.
I say do the piston and get some HD head studs put in while it's apart. Stock head studs are notorious for pulling out of the soft aluminum cylinder, so having the studs done by someone like C&D or GT Thunder is a must with a high CR piston, in my opinion. I say that because a lot of people on here, myself included, have run into that problem. With that done, you'll have a very solid foundation for future mods. If money's a real issue, you may be able to find an XR400R dirt bike cam on eBay for really cheap. That, along with a high compression piston and a thinner XR400R gasket set, will give you really good gains for minimal $$$.

I would do the cam first but doesnt stage 2 give you more low end or am I backwards.
