how much money do you guys spend after purchasing your quad, to make it completely race ready??? mx or trail

The more money you have, the more you spend. Some people are happy with a pipe and a few goodies, others go out of control. I lean more toward the out of control mark, but I am able to afford it. I know too many guys who finance, run up credit cards and borrow to add every single aftermarket part on the planet and they are no faster than the guy on the stock quad. But they do have a *****en looking ride, but last time I checked, nobody won a race on how cool their bike looked.

There is no answer to this question, the ideas and mods are only limited to how much you want to spend or can afford.

a few musts to make a bike race ready in my eyes are:

precision stabilizer
beadlock or reinforced wheels.
good tires.
good grips and bars that fit your comfortable riding posisiton.
skid plates if your racing xc.

things that are nice to have:

suspension set up for your weight
handguards
solid bumpers front and rear.
motor work and exhaust. (notice i didn't say this earlier. just caue you have power doesn't mean your fast. spend the money on things that will make the bike handle better first. then go for motor work and power)

don't waste your money on the small bling bling items. they just lower your spending amount and don't do anything but add looks for your bike. if your worried about "race ready" bling is the last thing you need to worry about.

I think if I totaled up the cost of the parts I've purchased and the price of the quad, I'd still be under $5500, I'm under $6000 for sure.... Also not pictured Hermann steering stem and Quadtech seat cover. I bought a lot of my parts right here in the used section. There is also a cam and piston (that you cant see obviously). I'm a true budget racer.

I have about $9,000 in mine plus what I paid for it.

I'm not saying it was all necessary. I think a stabilizer, suspension (rebuild your stockers), tires, nerfs, bars & grips are a good start. Then you can go from there.

I'm over $20g's including the machine brand new!! EEEEEEK!! Keep in mind this is the price sheet on my new build, or at least part of it, and this included a full built national motor w/ complete bottom end.

I'd say to compete at the national lever most guys have at least $16000-20000 into there machines. I have $5400 just in suspension... ( 3 shocks , a arms and swinger w/ link ) so that gives you an idea of what people spend.

Your best bet is to just get the bare necessities and go from there.

All good advice so far.

My best piece of advice is to try racing in the "stock" class if they have it. Make sure you like it before you invest in parts. Some people are worried about spending money and then come to find out they don't like it.

I race for fun, not trophies or money! If I can make a race, great! If I can't, I don't get all upset or bent out of shape cause the tradeoff of not racing is that I got to do something else.

With all that said, my quad is not the nicest or the fastest...........but it is sitting in the same spot that I parked it 2 months ago.

My 2 pesos!

Good way of thinking Dave! I really should have the amount of money into mine since I havn't raced since Feb, but I enjoy building somewhat more than I do riding.

Mod your machine for what you need, not neccesarily what you want or think you need cuz the pro's run it.

speaking from experience, do a lot of research before buying stuff. i spent alot of useless money buying parts only to sell them and buy what i really wanted later. a trail quad and mx quad could be completely different setups. so, as some have pointed out here, figure out what you want to do first.

Best advice I guess I can give is just to do it right the first time. I've made too many changes in the past and am now running what I have come to realize is my personal favorite setup.

Everyone likes different things and certain setups work for some but not others, its all in trying new things and learning what works best for yourself.

i've never actually put a pen to it to see exacly what it was but if i had to guess... about 15-16G's?

but when you get into racing... its not the bike thats alot... its the $4000 worth of hotels and the gas to get there and the 2 15,000 race bikes and the 3 practice bikes and the prarie pit bike and the race trailer and all extra parts and practice tires and race tires and $10 a gallon race fuel and extree fee's and practice and race and transponder fees... the sport is quite expencive

Ive got about 6 grand into mine (because of the front end i have sitting on my table waiting to be put on) , including the cost of the quad.

id say i have about $2000 in parts that are on it right now, and i race production, haha but i have an LSR axle, LSR DC-4's, Fox floats, Elka elite rear shock, and pro dual linkage waiting to go on this winter, so thats close to 4 grand in parts if i bought them all brand new, i traded my 110 for the rear end and got good deals on everything else. i have no money now, but i think its worth it haha
