ok i know a little bit about both quads, but which is faster in an all out drag stock? i would think the preddy because of the extra cc's. which is better for the trail (like gncc's) and which is better for the track and the dunes. what are the major headaches about both machines?

I've owned a Predator and spent considerable time on a 400ex. Of the two I would recommend the 400ex. The preds just don't hold together and the build quality is VERY poor. The pred does have a strong motor, but thats the only thing going for it.

400ex is higher quality but im sure an 05 or up pred would be decent the 03 preds dont wheelie so if ur a wheelier don't get an 03 pred ... but they do have a strong motor

my cousin has an 03 preddy and he can wheelie like nothing, but he has it piped and jetted.

I would get the 400EX, it's been around forever and their known for the reliability.

reliability isn't the biggest issue for me... well it is but it isn't. i don't mind working on a quad for a few hours to get it running again. but if it's going to be like every other ride then i won't buy the quad. i know honda's are the most reliable but i've never heard anything bad about preddy's reliability:confused:

I would try them both out and decide by yourself what feels more comfortable. Determine how much power you actually need for what kind of riding you will be doing. Then go by the amount of work/price for the machine. Then you will be satisfied with what you are getting.

For further down the road, decide if you will want to modify your machine and what type of modifing you could/would do. Overall, decide what one you think you would have more fun on.

For me, I have owned my 400ex for 4 years I believe, and have never had it break down in the middle of no where. Another influence that affected me was the weight of the machine. The Pred weighs alot more than that of the 400ex and I wanted to be able to control the machine.

Then you don't want a pred. I worked on mine more than I rode it. I was a memeber of a predator site while I owned mine and watched everyone break/lock up their quads routinely. Don't get me wrong its a fun machine, but they are not built well.

The 05 and up are better, but in my opinion they never fixed their biggest problem in the first place. Their quality control and attention to detail. It is just a sloppy put together machine and I would not own one again. Plus they have CRAP for resale value WHEN(not if) you decide to sell it.

i won't mod the atv except for a pipe, tires, filter and jetting. if i want to go faster i'll buy a 450 or a 700. what's the average price i could get a 400ex (01-06) used as well as a preddy(03-06) ?

to me the worst part about a predator is workign on it. the frame is SAE, the motor is metric and the plastic is torx head

the pred. suspension (at least on my 06 TLD) is way better than a 400ex, but the pred weighs more. all in all, i think if you are a bigger guy ( 6 ft or more) the pred will be more comfortable being its ergonomics are a little more spread out

Buying a preditor is the worst decision you will make in your life. Definately get the 400ex. Preditors are a waste of money and space and are garbage. Just not becuase they are polaris its just becuase they are piles of junk. I know someone that has one and all he does is trail rides adn the frame broke in like half and they just dont hold up.

predators dont hold up to aggresive riding at all. there known for transmission problems. especially 03 and older. after 03 is a lil bit better. youll spend way more time riding than wrenching if you get a 400ex.

correct me if im wrong, but wasnt 03 the first year for them? my cousin had this exact same issue when picking a new quad. 400ex vs. 03 pred. he ended up going with the predator and it was fast, had nice stock shocks, and it looked pretty cool. however, it wasnt nearly as nimble and it had to be rebuild prematurely, eventually draining is wallet. my vote goes to the 400 as well simply for the reliability. keep in mind that any machine is only as reliable as its owner.

ok thanks for your input everyone, predator is now out of the question. big questions on honda though..
if i was to buy a totally stock 400ex, are they a wheelie machine? can they jump well? how is the suspension (nothing can be worse than a honda 350 utility:scary: )?, is it worth looking into a different 400? like a dvx, kfx or z? even though they are all practically the same. is it possible to install 450r or other 450's shocks onto a 400ex? are their any cheap mods that boost performance without spending a whole paycheck?:(

400ex is the easiest quad to wheelie like ever ... the suspension is fine for trails and small jumps but you could never go to a real track and enjoy blasting off the jumps with the stock shocks ... yes 450r shocks can go on a 400ex with slight modification, a hmf pipe and an aftermarket airfilter jetted correctly and a nice set of tires will be decent upgrades for a while, z400's and the rest of it copies are actully quite different from 400ex's there a faster machine and have better front suspension but there awfully tall =p ur welcome for the absolute book i just wrote you
