I have a stock 400EX with a curtis spark pipe, jet kit, and K&N filter. I am considering purchasing a Hot Cam stage 1 or stage 2 cam. Has anyone used one of these and if so was it worth the cost and effort to install?

Get the Stage 1, Stage 2 is for bigger bore ex's. I have the stage 2 in mine, helps my motor make 42hp

the stock cams in the 400's, and 450rs are really restrictive, i put a stage one in my 450r and it really woke up, you will really feel a difference

It should be the complete opposite, look at their site.
Stage 1- More mid-top end
Stage 2- Same as stage 1 with more top end

so it shouldnt be bottom-mid gains

Aye he's running it on more CC's. From my VERY LIMITED knowledge... Generally that will shift the power curve down in the RPM range a bit since the cam is tuned for max power at a certian volume throughput. A larger displacement will get to that volume throughput at a lower rpm. Of course modifying the intake & exhaust ports will also shift that point.
