About 2 months ago I dunked my 05 z400 in a river and sucked some water up. After I changed oil (ita was clean and not milky at all), cleaned and re-oiled air filter, changed gas, removed carb and cleaned, replaced new sparkplug, and checked compression 135#'s. It ran fine for 2 rides, then it would only run on choke, it backfired and the header glowed brightly. So again i removed carb and cleaned all jets and bowl, it has stock jetting and stock exhaust if fact besides a swingarm skid it's all stock. Bike ran great for 1 ride, then again it only runs on choke and backfires, the air filter is clean and I know the carb is still clean. It has a tps because it's an 05 but disconected it still behaves the same. I think possibly the CDI could be bad from the water, but it runs great after a disassembly of the carb, and there is no water in the gas. Why would it be so lean that when hot it still needs to be choked to run. The bike is all stock, what other electrical parts could be fried to make this condition but also let it run great once in a while?
Thanks for any help!!!!

Just a few weeks ago I was ridin at a local track and my Z began to run like crap, but it went in and out. It would only run on choke also. I drained all the gas and changed the plug and it runs awesome. So what i am sayin is try that and see what happens. Hopefully I could help

sounds like carb still has trash in it. Also check fuel flow

yea my guess wouldnt be electrical..almost 100% its fuel delivery related....it might be somethin with the carb isn't getting tight when you put it back together...carbs are tricky and extremely picky...the floats might be off or somethin.

could also be a sticking float now that we brought up floats

nvr mind that should make it sputter and or not start due to fuel issue( had that problem too) i wasnt thinking earlier my fault. i would try your fuel srew first. just add alittle fuel and see if it gets better. if not then rejet it. change the plug while your at it

1st I' check for air leaks at the intake manifold. If you're getting too much air it could stall you. Using the choke cuts off some of the air supply and is helping to equalize the fuel/air mix.

Either that or you aren't getting enough fuel. Clogged jets, etc.

Make sure you got the o-ring back on the top cover that covers up the slide and actuation arm.
