I am new to quad riding, I have been riding 2 stroke dirt bikes all my life. I just bought a stock 05 trx450r.. I have also ridden an 07 trx450r.. I am 250 lbs...On my 2 stroke cr250 I am used to that soft ride, the bike absorbs every bump and its so plush...On the quads I am almost hanging on for dear life! Tons of arm pump and wrist pump and I feel every bump. Rear seems soft enough..my problem is the front..
It looked alot more easier to ride than I thought :) I am not even really having fun on it.. My question is, anyway to set this up sorta like a 2 stroke dirtbike suspension where I can glide over everything? Or is it that I am expecting a dirt bike ride and not being realistic since its a quad and not a dirtbike?
I just cannot for the life of me understand how anybody can jump anything or fly through the trails with it so stiff..I really used to think that quads were so much easier to ride than a dirtbike but boy was I WRONG, exactly the opposite..
Also would a trx250r be better for my needs?

Get you stock shocks rebuilt. I have the GT Thunder XC package and couldn't be happier. It is about $750. They respring and revalve the shocks for your weight and riding style/ability and you get a new rear link.

In my opinion its the rearend on the 450r that has issues. If your feeling its the front more than the rear. I'd try to soften the conpression, and maybe slow the rebound a tad. [small adjustments is all you'll need]. now when the rearend bucks as we all know the 04-05's do. That can throw you into the handlebars alot making you think its the front acting up.

I came off a fully suspended 416ex to my 04 450r and I hated it till I widened it and had my 3 shocks rebuilt. That helped so much till I started getting faster and faster on the same tracks. Now I seem to have found the limits on the rearend even after the rebuild and new rear link.

also im a small guy very light so I also thought the stock shocks were set on the hard side stock.

As for the the soft dirtbike ride thats going to be hard to recreate. remember on the dirtbike there is only 2 tires on the ground so thats less feed back to you as the rider.

heres a pic or 2, probly seen it since I posted it so many times :)

Pounding through the whoops I still find the rearends limits as you can see in this last pic, but that was 4th gear up that hill.
