I just finished cleaning the carb. I was clean inside. I have problems with starting a cold engine. I takes about 5 cranks to start it. What can the problem be. Should I adjust the valves?? I hear ticking.

try going up to a 42 pilot jet and pumping the gas three times before you start it. ex's are all horrible while starting cold, but this should help quite a bit.

sorry dont mean to hijack your thread, but is the stock pilot on a 400ex 38?

But its not really that cold. IT was in the 70's for sure in chicago. I had no problem starting it a few weeks ago. Let it sit for 2 weeks and thats when the problem started. It will start eventually, but not like it used to.

try cleaning your spark plug. Fouled plugs will take longer to start an engine.

i agree sounds like a pilot jet issue and a fuel screw adjustment. i put a #40 in mine and it took care of the cold starting blues.

well if theres ticking i would defiantly get the valves adjusted. it might not be the reason its not starting but if theres ticking you need to get them adjusted.
