Kick Start Lockup

Halfway through riding today my kick starter locked up. i could put all my weight on it and not move it. every once is a while it would come loose and get one kick out of it. we could push start it and it still ran fine, seemed to be no problem in the motor or tranny at all. its just the kick starter.
any clue what this problem is and how to fix it?

Pull the cover and see what broke.
