Alright this is the problem. I changed the oil and oil filter this morning. I then had to go somewhere for a minute and when i came back, i got it out, cranked it up ran it for a minute, then cut it off to check the oil. Looked low so i added more oil. Then i cleaned up what i spilled. When i went to crank it up again it wouldnt crank. I checked the air filter and made sure i had gas and i did. Also when i was cleaning it, i pulled the fourwheeler up on a ramp to make the removal of the engine skid plate easier. I pulled the spark plug out to check it and it looked pretty black. Could this be the problem or something else? I tried cranking with the choke on and off, no go. Any help will be great

sounds like you put the wrong oil filter on it or put it in back wards if you put it in back wards dont try to start it a because it will ruin you top end

alright i called Honda and asked them bout the filter yesterday when i was putting it in and they said it was the right filter. I bought it from my local dealer. She read off the model number of what i should have and then it was right, i am about positive i put it in the right way. But why would it start one time and not start the next?

How much gas was in it? Try switching it to reserve, the fuel level can be deceptive.

The oil filter is in right. I just pulled it off and looked. I tried cranking before with it on reserve and still no fire. Could putting to much oil in it cause this?

possibly, but i've always wondered where the oil filter actully is on a quad? its an external filter right? also did yu fill the filter with oil because on a car it will pressurize and fill but i dont know if quads do that?

yes it is an external oil filter. On mine is located on the side of the motor where the rear brake lever and the exhaust side. I am about to go try to crank again. If this dont work i am going to change out the spark plug tomorrow and see if it is just the spark plug cause i pulled the spark plug also and it looked really black

i like it alot. It isnt the fastest quad around but i can have a lot of fun on it without getting hurt. It has pretty decent power and since it is my first quad that i have owned, i love it.

yeah and the good thing about your bike is you can really mod them out on a quad like mine theres like tires, pipe, filter, rev limiter, and pistons not to much more you can do it to power wise

anyone got anything else? I took the spark plug out and cleaned it up a little and then put it back in and it fired up. It didnt run good still. So i am going to go get a new plug one day this week. Since winter is coming up should i get a cold weather plug or just stick with the normal plug?

hey got a question, where is the crankcase drain plug? I didnt know it had one until i read something on it, i read the article on here. This is more than likely the problem i probably have to much oil in the bike and it fouled the plug. It didnt say anything about it in the owners manual, so if someone can tell me the where abouts of it, i would appricate it. Thanks

it right under the motor there will be a hole in the plastic skid plate get a socket wrench and take it out and drain the oil and i would replace the oil fliter too but thats just me

yeah that is the one i drained, but i was reading an article about the 400ex and it was saying drain two different things plus where the oil filter is

Stick with the stock plug designation.

I think your plug is just fouling out. You could be running a tad rich.

maybe you have the choke on

timb052
10-03-2007, 07:41 AM
what do u mean i might have the choke on? I cut it off as soon as it cranks up and gets warm

monster300ex

you do no need to use the choke in the summer I do not use the choke and I live in canada
maybe your air filer is dirty

timb052

well your wrong i do need to use the choke when i first crank it up. If i dont i cant keep it running long enough to take off

monster300ex

Ok on mine you do not have to use the choke
mine will start and drive with no choke at -10
clean your air filer and carb. you may have water in the gas
it is hard to say whats wrong with it
with not seeing it

alright i am going to clean the filter and change the spark plug this weekend. Any tips on how to clean the filter?

10-03-2007, 09:41 AM
the 300ex only has one drain plug, the 400ex has one in a similar spot to the 300ex and one on its oil tank.

my guess is a bad plug...did you change anything with the jetting? add an aftermarket filter or exhuast?

since in your first post, you said the plug was pretty black, i am going to assume that was from carbon buildup, telling me you are too rich...you might have left the choke on for too long adn fouled th plug

timb052

no i havent messed with the jetting or added an exhaust, everything is stock. I might have left it on to long one time before, not sure. Like i say i am goin to change the plug either friday or over the weekend.
