"Decent sized" is kind of a relative descriptor. So, it's hard to say if what your seeing is out of the ordinary.

I have not found it to be all that unusual to find metal in filters if you're looking for it. I cut open my filters to spread out the paper material for examination and can usually find some little metallic particles. It helps keep tabs on what's happening with the engine. Like this....

The little shiny specs are metal bits.

You are more likely to find more and larger pieces when new parts are installed or an engine is brand new. Some of what you found may be from the new gear mating with it's neighbors. Also consider some of what you found may have been debris (that was never flushed out) from whatever happened to the old gear.

I'd change the oil and filter again soon. Re-examine the filter. If you don't find anything out of the ordinary then don't worry about it. If you continue to see what you think are excessive shavings then you'll know to investigate further.
