My brother ports and polishes heads if anyone wants it done for a resonable price give it a thumbs up or down, if enough people want it he's going to start doing it. He does heads for himself and his friends on their race cars. I haven't seen any posts about porting so this is just a thought. If any one is intrested let me know.

I'm just throwing the idea in the air to see if anybody is intrested. I do not have a flow bench there for I can't charge like the big race shops but I do have knowledge about airflow in an engine and how to improve it. Some of you guys give me some Ideas on prices, I was thinking around $150+ shipping for four strokes? I'm not sure about 2 strokes yet.

2 strokes are pretty tricky 1 flub and it wouldn't run worth a crap. $150 is a deccent price thats about half of what some engine builders charge.

I've been thinking about opening a performance shop for atvs maybe dirtbikes too. all the shops around here just do the basic stuff and if you do get them to do any high performance work they just ship it off and charge you for shipping plus add to the actual price of the work. Thats why one guy charges $500(ships it of and takes the credit) and the other only $250(does the work himself)

Danney f I've been seriously thinking of opening my own shop also I just don't know how to go about doing it.

My port job is all around but works best from mid to top. The more air in and out makes hp

Check out Motorcycle Mechanics IN. They have all kinds of coarses, I would enroll to get the training and degree but the closes one to me is in chicago and I'm at the other end of the state.

I've already checked it out. I can't afford to go to school for that long. I have a wife and 3 kids:D . I'm pretty good with engines anyway. I'm a deisel mechanic now I would just rather work on something that i really love, you know.

Atvrider96 - Same here wife with full time job, my full time+ job and 3kids. Ive always worked on my own cars and quads and friends quads+cars, just would like to have the training to learn the tricks of the trade.

Mod300ex - Carb is a piece of cake of coarse, only problems with it is the boot from the carb to head is a very tight fit and honda puts the same size of pilot in the 400ex carb as they do with the 300ex(reason for 400ex's haveing trouble starting) made it run a lot leaner.

clutch - I like a lot, before I put it in I had trouble putting it nuetral, now I have no problem with it. I changed it in about 45minutes, it came with the metal plates so you don't have to set there and measure the thickness of them and make sure their still good. Just change them out.

can someone explain to me what a port and polish is? and why have it done, and one more question. should i do it with a motor that just has a jet kit in it and pipe?

lets put it this way........Turbulance in an engine is BAD! What porting and polishing does, is the engine builder goes in and cleans up all the ruff edges and makes ports bigger and just pretty much cleans up all the rough edges to get it to flow better. A good builder will clean it up and polish it to the point it looks like a mirror. And like it was said b4 one little nick in a port on a 2 stroke can pretty much ruin a cylinder. I have one of the best 250R engine builders in the country about 1/4 mile from my house. DBY racing he does ALOT of top notch Micro sprint engines. Did my 400EX, and it helped ALOT. Just a more smoother power. he charges about.......200-250 and does prob. the best porting and polishing jobs ive ever seen.

Don't this the wrong way but porting for cars and quads is completely different. What works for a cars doesn't always work on dirt bike motors. Porting to large or in the wrong spot (ie. top of port instead of bottom of port) can actually decrease performance. Porting is best left to those who have experience with that particular motor, thats why shops charge so much, it's for all their R+D time.

Anyone can grind down aluminum with a dremel tool. To port the correct way, you need a flowbench. Period. Let us know when you invest in one.

I agree that for a perfect port and polish a flow bench is needed! Thats why the big names charge so much!! TC charged me $495 to port and polish my head,,,it looks like a mirror throughout the whole head!! When i had my 416 I had a local guy here do it and he charged me $100 for a full race port,,,he does a damned good job too,,,,,of course he doesnt have a flow bench but his work is nice!!

A local Honda dealer ported and polished my buddies Warrior head last spring. He doesnt have a flow bench. He charged 100 clams too and the work looks a little suspect.

Yes a flow bench is needed for the perfect port job but for minor porting it is not needed as long as you know where to remove metal. A mirror finnish is bad on the intake side, it makes fuel droplets stick to the walls of the port. You only want the combustion chamber and the exhuast side polished.

hey danney f, what kind of jetting did you run with your 400ex carb?? i was thinkin bout putting one on my 300 but i am not sure yet. right now its got a pipe, k&n air filter and jets in it do you think the carb would help me out much?? i hear the 300ex motor is down on airflow because of the head. but now i dont have the money for porting.
