Who all does this powder coating at home? Do you use an oven or what? Where do you get the supplies? How expensive is it to get into powder coating? I just want to do little things. Probably nothing bigger than an intake off of a 350 chevy.

try eastwood (http://www.eastwoodcompany.com)

look at the powders...ovens and supplies etc.

Pappy, what are the sides of that spray booth made of? And what did you use to pull a draft through the filters at the bottom?

Pappy

actually i built that today.....

it is smooth white tile board. i still have to seal the corners and add the trim....

there is a fan below those 2 filters that creates the down draft. knida experimental....lol but it did work great tonight. i think i will add another static filter at the back section....haha.....it lso is a good place to get pics when the sun aint out

A local Powdercoating shop like uses magnets and hooks it to the metal so the spray sticks to it better. Now I`m sure that would be expensive.

the powdercoating gun i have has a grounding wire. when i am doing the first coat....i attach it to the large 3/4 inch all thread that i use as a hanging pole. i find that the threads help keep the lil wire hangers in place. but yes....the metal has to be grounded in order to promote the static effect on the powder.

Yeah I don`t remember how it all worked, but the Guy explained it and it sounded like a nice setup. He had his motorcycle frame sandblasted and powdercoated for $275. I didn`t think that was to bad really.

Pappy

$275 isnt bad. i know there are cheaper places....but i geuss it all depends on where you live. the local pc shop here ....$400 for a quad frame. and they dont do special colors.

How much do you charge? Also another thing you have to consider is the Shipping there and back.

Pappy

well i dont do frames. but if i did, i wouldnt do one for less then $350. it really is a lot of work.....and the time spent shipping etc has to be considered. just think......we will pay $250 for a set of plastic that lasts 6 months.....then its as bad as what we replaced......but we whine over teh same amount for pc on our frames and it will last for many years and still look new.

I was thinking of making one out of the same stuff, I can get it for next to free. Now, by fan, you mean box fan, or ?

So far I have the compressor, and the sand blaster is on its way. I have yet to order the PC gun. I want to get every thing together before I get the gun. So when it gets here I can get right to it. I am still looking for a great deal on an oven. Free or next to it would be good.

Call me tight, but I want to see just how cheap I can get into this. So far the only thing I have paid for is $75 for the blast cabinet, and $35 for a new regulator for my compressor.
I have an Ir heater that is rated for 60kBTU, but I can't find any one to build me an oven to put it in for a reasonable cost.

well...if all ya gonna do is small stuff......get a household oven. i bought one for $40 bucks at a yard sale. it is one of the best tools i have;) if ya dont have 220 in yer garage...get a propane oven. i would stay away from building your own....but if you really just have to have one.....email me and i will send ya a few pics of mine.

chris.....i hear ya;) i had a fella try to convince me to do about $200 worth of work for free:eek: just because im still NEW at this......i geuss he is at wal mart buying spray paint about now:devil

Actually all I have an intrest in is small stuff. So far the biggest thing I need to PC is a set of eight shock springs for custom sand-rails. The longest piece will easily hang sideways in a household oven. and I think the biggest square boxy piece is the size of a small toaster oven.
Lots of valve covers, engine pullies, motor mounts ect. ect.
Then of course there is the little nickle & dime parts for my own stuff;)
The big propane fired IR oven would be nice but then you just have folks buggin ya to do bigger things.

I ain't lookin to get rich, just support a habit:)
