I am looking at a few new to me trucks. Mine sucks in the winter only 2 wheel drive and not enough pulling power. I am looking at a few 2000 Chevy Silverado Z71 1500 and am kinda wondering how much I could actualy pull with a truck like this and still be safe.

Thanks, Nick

definitely factor in whether your trailer has its own brakes too.

I had a Nissan Pathfinder pulling an aluminum snowmobile trailer with 4 quads and gear up and down the mountains of WV with no problems...except mileage. ;) It has electric brakes on one of the axles. It was a 2001 Pathfinder that was 240hp.

yeah if I do pull anything big it would def. have trailer brakes.

You'll be able to pull pretty much anything with less than a tri-axle.

I have a rcsb 1995 F150 with the 4.9 I6 and a 5-speed, and I pulled a tandem axle 16 foot (I think?) trailer that didn't have trailer brakes with 4 fourwheelers on the trailer, and 3 dirtbikes in the back of my truck, without a problem, other than fuel economy, which was previously mentioned.

I guess a better question would be, what do you plan to pull with it?

It's a chevrolet so I wouldn't plan on it pulling much:devil:

No offense...but that is a horribly wrong statement.

Although you may be able to "pull" anything in that criteria....you certainly won't be able to stop it, or handle it in a strong cross wind, or even in any situation.

There are a lot of factors to think about here. Look at the tow rating of the truck, tongue weight, hitch weight, etc. A well equipped Z71 can tow a decent load. You should have no problem pulling a 16 or 20 ft flatbed hauling quads, just as long as the trailer is not ridiculously heavy and it has good brakes. A good weight-distributing hitch, sway control, and a good brake controller (Prodigy hands-down) can go a long way. Make sure that you distribute the loads evenly across the trailer and you will be fine. Oh, and get the 5.3. The 5.3 is a pretty good little motor and the 4L80E tranny is a workhorse. I have the 6.0/4L80E in my 03 1500HD crew cab 4x4 and I have pulled a 22ft enclosed with 5 quads, pickup bed loaded down, and 3 passengers with no problem.

I have a 99 z71 ls, 4x4, extended cab short bed, 5.3L, with 113,000 miles on it and i pull a 16ft. 2200 lbs. trailer with 3 quads, all my gear, plus a full cab without any problems. I get 17 mpg without the trailer and 11 with it. I'm actually considering selling it for 8000 with a cowl hood, nerf bars, hypertech programmer, new tires and some other dress-up stuff. Love the truck but im looking for a diesel.

My dad has a 2006 GMC 1500 Crew Cab and we towed my neighbors tractor that weighed prolly 3500 LBS cause he had the loader and the york rake on it and a 2500 LB trailer like it wasn't even there through some very hill back roads. My dad has the 5.3 305 Vortec in his.;)

I have an 03 Silverado 2wd with the 4.8 and the tow capacity is about 7800 lbs. I tow a 4000 lb 23ft Toyhauler camper with it to the races with no problem.

I was going to say. the F150 5.4 is a 331 so the 5.3 305 didn't make since.

all the newer vortecs are based off the old motors, aka. 4.8 - 305
5.3 - 327
5.7 - 350
8.1 - 496
