Hehehe...........closed! Oh no you dont, I want to get me some of this!

Beerock wrote "Using a synthetic in a fresh engine is WRONG"

I have to dissagree. A fresh motor is the perfect time to use a synthetic. Why? Fact or Fiction? Ill take "FACTS" for 1000$ Alex.

The fact is conventional oils contain detergents. These detergents are intended to pick up metal shavings, debris, your dogs lost toy or whatever. It carries them away from bearings and will usually deposit them it a spot in the motor that doesnt see much washout. Its almost like the oil traps the debris and holds onto it, keeping it out of the moving parts. Now, say you change your oil. You drain your oil off, but you dont flush your system with another quart to flush it out good before your plug it up. Some of the deposits remain. Now you want to stick a Synthetic oil in it. The synthetic is known to break those particles free and circulate them all over again in the motor. Big Deal? Probably not, but you never know. I bet you guys never called Mobil and asked them if they reccommended their synthetic oil for a WET CLUTCH setup? Anyone, Anyone? Ill put a flat weight syn., I like the 40w because Im down south where it is hot, against ANY natural petroleum oil any day. The key is, you have to make sure the Synthetic you use is okay for a WET CLUTCH setup. The Mobil One you guys are probably buying is the oil made for the vehicles. They do make a hard to find Synthetic that is geared for wet clutches.

At royal purple, check out the products section. I run the Royal Purple Motor Oil, which it suggest usage for motorcycles.

The info I have? I live about 5 minutes from an EXXONMOBIL Polyolifens plant and have serveral friends that work there in operations, which makes synthetic oils, and work in a paper mill in close contact with lubrication specialists and engineers. We have been very impressed with the Royal Purple, so much I gave their oil a try. I will make this PROMISE. Crank your bike with the Mobil, then drain it. Put the Royal Purple in, and you will HEAR the difference, I guarantee. Mobil is a good oil, as long as you get the oil they make SAFE FOR WET CLUTCHES!

There, I hope I stirred up the pot.

Ok i just called them and they didnt recommend running the 15w50 in wet clutch applications. I asked why and the only reason he could give me is the Motorcycle oils have a higher Zinc and Phosphorous content that is better suited to Motorcycles and ATV's.

And guys lets keep this a discussion and NOT a heated argument.:D

I can tell you all this. Cannondale recommends using full synthetic for both the engine and tranny from day one.

I use the new Klotz MX4 oil. It's designed for four stroke motocross engines as the name implies.

I dont think synthetics are bad. The problem is alot of synthetics have additives that are bad for a wet clutch setup. I know for a fact Royal Purple is safe for wet clutch setups. I know for a fact Mobil1 syn. is not intended for wet clutch setups.

i know 4 a fact u r wrong. mobil 1 syn. has many different formulations that u must not know of. There is no "mobil 1". Please dont post oil revelations unless u really know what u r talkin about, we drink the stuff around here.

Why do u assume we are using the wrong formulation of Mobil 1.

I have always used their one for motorcycles with "wet cluthes" as I know others have also.

Read your quote that Knight used. You said the Mobil 1 is not good for wet clutches. Sure some aren't but thats why nobody uses them. They only use the one good for a wet clutch. Don't start arguements over somthing that none of us can prove. Its stricty opinions.

So Is Mobil 1 15/50 safe for atv's. The One I have says nothing about the use for wet clutch applications???

It's probably ok, but u really dont wanna use it. Get a synthetic that has somethin written about atv's or motorcycles on the bottle.

I'm confused:confused: , i thought that most guys on here use the 15/50 without problems, and i'm not talking about racing, i'm just talking about my 'just for fun' trail riding that i do on my 400,,,later

ALL I can say is Bel-Ray all the way!
Bel-Ray semi synthetic 20-50 in the hot summer
Bel-Ray semi synthetic 10-40 in the cold winter

futher more.....why would any of you guys want to put a auto oil in a high performance quad even if it doesn't have an effect on the clutch? There are reasons why their are companies like Maxium and Bel-Ray out there, THEY MAKE MOTORCYCLE, QUAD, AND STREETBIKE oils and only them oils. Stay away from car oils, their is no reason for them in a quad. Bel-Ray makes oils for this purpose, I am not talking up Bel-Ray, buy whatever you want buy the high dollar honda oil if you want. Just don't use auto oil.:o

11-05-2002, 12:27 AM
Does anyone know for sure which of the "motorcycle type" oils are actually made by the MFG (belray, maxim etc) and not just a relabled product from mobil or Shell etc.

Curious due to the many many companies who specialize in our stuff cause we are willing to pay so much more for something that claims to be for our expensive toys.

BTW this is such a confusing subject cause I have talked to so many people running std mobil1 auto oil with no problems that I even went as far as buying a couple quarts, but due to the negative stuff I have heard also I had never put it in, now there is a waste of $$$.

Bel-Ray has been in the game along time. I can't even imagen them being part of shell with a different label. I know guys that run Fully synthetic Bel-Ray street bike oil in their quads. Its $12.99 a quart here.

Guys,

I would like to point all of you again to the link that Gabe posted several days ago:

http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/oiltest1.htm

If you are truly interested in getting to the bottom of this debate take some time and do your own research. I'm not passing judgment on an particular brand of oil but I would strongly urge you all to try and look past the very convincing marketing of the motorcycle and ATV oil manufacturers. DO NOT let the fluff information on a bottle of oil convince you that it is somehow superior.

To answer the often asked question on this topic "why would you use an automobile oil in a high performance ATV?" - because it flaming works just as well and costs significantly less (in my opinion anyway).

Either way, just make an informed decision. Don't let yourself be led by the nose by the marketing departments of the oil companies.

Dennis

Okay, here's what we agree on.

Synthetics are okay, but make sure the sythetic you get is intended to be used with a wet clutch setup.
