I can see where bailing is good in some situations, but I have never had the urge to let go of the bike in mid-air. Even when I know I'm going to crash, it's never even crossed my mind.:ermm:

I would've rode it out....even if I would have crashed the suspension would decrease the impact.

I've never even thought about bailing as said by Scro, but Damn he was high!

I dunno guys.

I think he jumped long and was about to land flat or right in the angle at the bottom. He was going too fast--he meant to land on the downside of that dune, not clear the thing.

He may have bailed so his body could have a chance at landing on the downslope rather than staying with the bike and landing flat. That could have been very ugly from that height if he was about ready to land long and flat. It's ugly either way, but he may have just chosen the lesser of two evils. Had he landed flat there's probably no way he could have prevent his torso and face from slamming into the bike.

I'm just speculating--but I might rather free-fall without the bike into the very end of the downslope than land with the bike on the flat.

Check out what happens when you over-jump and land flat:

That is Dan Pastor. He's a pro FMX rider and even he can't land safely when you miss your landing on a jump that huge. That crash seriously messed him up.

Like a couple have said, i never have time to even think to bail in mid air, i just land with the quad and see what's gonna happen. For me, i know if i'm gonna eat as soon as i go off the jump. :ermm:

Whether he stays on or he bails, it's probably all the same from a height like that.

Also, I doubt it was a real conscious decision, weighing the pros and cons. I bet he just plain panicked. And who could blame him?

I think he shoulda held on a little longer, he bailed to early and to high....i would waited another couple of feet to bail.
