Bought this a couple months ago. 2000 CR500R. Here it is just after I brought it home....

Here it is after lots of clean-up, a new piston, new pipe/silencer, new plastic (still waiting on new OEM rad shrouds), used stock tank, used replacement subframe (came with bike), new chain/sprockets, oversized front brake kit, stuff I'm probably forgetting, and lots of odds n' ends....

Picked up my license plate a few days ago. Not really planning on dual sporting with the bike. But I like to be "legal" riding on the roads near my house after washing, for tuning, or just for the heck of it. I figure if I can get a plate, I might as well. Insurance is running me less than $100/yr and registration and emissions testing was about $60. Seems worth it just for the luxury. I could still get a ticket for no headlight or tail/brake light, but they can't quite throw the book at me. At least I'm trying to be legal and I think that goes a long way with most cops. I'm exploring lighting options but there doesn't seem to be good choices unless you spend big money.

Sand rubber and extra rear wheel. The Viper that's mounted is cracking and worn. Can't decide if I want to extent the life of my Hooker by running the Viper to the very end or not. I don't want to loose any cups on the first day and wish I had swapped to the new tire.

Check out how a 250r piston/cylinder compares to a 500!

Can't wait to get it in the sand! My plan is to have it replace the 95' CR250R (below) as my main dune bike. But I'm keeping an open mind. Even though the CR500R is hailed as one of the best dune bikes available, my CR250R is an exceptional blend of weight, power, and size. The 500 is a little thicker and heavier. It's gonna have to be really good for me to like it more than the 250. And it might be! The torque and outright power of the 500 might overshadow it's slight size/weight penalty. I'll see.

Will riding during daylight hours be considered legal without adding lights? With the proper use of hand signals of course;)

Looking forward to your ride report:)

A head light, tail light, brake light, and license plate light are all required equipment for a motorcycles in AZ. I'm not clear on whether the headlight has to actually be ON during operation--but it does need to be present on the bike and "in good working order". Technically, I'd also need a horn and one mirror.

Hand signals are second nature to me--so no problems there! Turn signals are not required equipment for motorcycles. I've got another bike that doesn't have them so I use hand signals all the time.

I'm considering a total-loss battery operated lighting system. There are also small lighting coils available that should fit under the stock flywheel but they're only 25 watts. Even running LED's in the back, that's not going to make for much of a headlight.

Either of those ideas would be more for being seen, not so much for seeing. Specifically, if an officer spots me it won't be so blatant that I'm riding a 100% dirt bike. Safety-wise, lights are certainly a big advantage; no question about that. Although, a major component my on-road motorcycle safety strategy includes assuming no one can see me anyway. A long time ago a guy told me to ride like I was invisible. That idea has served my well.

I dunno. Good lights won't be easy or cheap. Fair or poor lights will only be marginally useful. And I don't want to weigh the bike down with stuff or ruin it's clean aesthetics. I've got another bike that's better suited all around for road use anyway.

Yeah, the big cylinder. It dwarfs the 250r cylinder. The look similar except the 500 is so much bigger.

Here's some more:

You should hear it just idling in the garage. BANG!, BANG! BANG!, BANG!, BANG!....It vibrates and shakes....it's like a powerful racehorse, rippling with muscle, chomping at the bit, waiting to be released from the gates. :muscle:

Looks awesome! There's a Sevice Honda for sale in my area, now I really want to buy that thing!

You can't beat the power of them big bore bikes, I rode a YZ 490 back in the day, and it was a beast.

Very cool comaparison too, I never realized such a huge difference in size. It almost looks like the 250 jug will fit in the 500's!:blah:

Nice bikes!

Mostly just too keep it as slender and flat across the top. When I bought my CR250R it had an IMS desert tank on it. I thought it was fine and rode it like that. Then a friend was telling me I should get a stock tank. I resisted the idea at first but finally decided to pick one up. It really made a difference in how the bike felt.

The bigger tanks are nice for the extra range and I'm glad I have them available if I feel I'll need it. But for most riding the stockers just work better. Look better too!

Here's a super crappy video of the bike in my garage. I need to work on my video skills.

This doesn't quite do the bike justice, viscerally. In real life it's a lot more in your face.

I look for deals and stretch my resources. I almost never buy new. I like having the right "tool" for the job and many times that means different machines for different things. That's the logical explanation....

...The other way to look at it is that I've got a sickness and I need help. Threads like this are really a cry for help because deep down I know I'm in need of an intervention to stop me from buying more bikes. :huh :p

They're all jealous.

But really, I try and be respectful. If I made as much noise as I really wanted they'd probably all hate me!

I agree about the need to be seen part and now that I think of it i'm pretty sure out here motorcycles are required to have thier headlights on at all times.

I like the advice about riding like you're invisible to the other users of the roads. Makes alot of sense:)

Good looking bike GP. I had an 89 and 95 CR 500 and an 86 and 90 KX 500. Man will they put a smile on your face. My dad refers to a 500 as a trencher. He would come home and see the back lot and say " you been riding that f-ing trencher again aintcha"

oh well... hopefully the weather will be nice for that october 12th weekend...

yah- i have talked with you before about getting a CR... my buddy Joey and I were supposed to split one this summer, but he is building a a big house out in Las Sendas and said he coudlnt cough up the cash right now... so maybe next summer, or im thinking i may just buy it on my own...

problem is i would like to buy a house in the next year, and i need to get a toy hauler as well, as i cant get all my bikes down as it is now...

so... we'll see when i actually get one...

you missed a good night of riding GP... the weather was great, and the sand was great... i was on cloud 9 just having a blast!!!

i'm pretty stoked about my bike... you remember my buddy troy with the raptor 700 with the HMF, pro design, and Fuel controller?

well, last year he and i would have some good races...depending on the hill and the sand at a particular weekend, sometimes he would slightly pull me...

well, i just walked away from him this morning... it got to wear i would let him launch 1st and get a bike and a half ahead of me and then get on it, and by the top of the hill i would be 2 lengths in front of him... 3.5 bike lengths is pretty impressive i think for $400 for the pipe and a little bit of time retarding that cam...
