Is there anyway a 400ex will keep up on a motocross track?

Mine sure does. It's going to be mostly rider after all. If both have good suspension setups they will be very competitive, don't forget the 400 is an excellent handling machine in MX trim. The 450 will get you in the straights if your engine is pretty much stock but a well-built 416/426/440 or a 440/450 stroker should be able to keep up with ease.

I had a "fresh" (new to each machine) A class rider jump on my 440EX and turned in a faster lap time than on on my dads '06 HRC 450R

its all in the rider. iahve a bad 400 but its all in the rider.

the last part is not true. a well build motor period can stay ona 450 no prob. imm stock cc's and i so... but iv been known to red line =)
