I have a stock 99 400ex and I'm in need of a new chain, but I have no idea on the size I need. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I dont mean to be a pain but I've got one more question.

What's the difference between the DID x ring and standard, and can I run that with the stock sprockets? Thank you.

There's 3 types of 520 chain to choose from. Non O-ring, O-ring, and X-ring.

As you know, your 400 came stock with an O-ring chain. It has O-rings in between the links to seal lubricant into the rollers and keep out dirt, water, etc.

There's also traditional non O-ring chain that has none. The benefit here is less rolling resistance but you have no sealing protection for the rollers. Works well for the person that maintains their chain well but not a good choice if you don't.

The X-ring chain is simply a modified form of an O-ring chain. It has big O-rings twisted into an "X" shape. DID claims better sealing, you can read more if you want here: http://www.didchain.com/xring1.htm

IMO you can't go wrong with an O-ring or X-ring chain. You can run any type of 520 chain with stock sprockets as long as they are not severely worn. Yours being a 99, you may want to get new sprockets at the same time.
