How do reeds work and can you put them on a 400ex? Also, are they a good investment with minimal mods done to your engine?

They act as a check valve. You have to understand the theory of a two and four stroke motor. The two stroke uses the fuel to lube the bottom end. That is also how /where the fuel enters the cylinder. Without the reeds, when the piston is on the down stroke, the crank case preasure being made would force the air/fuel back out the carb intake instead of up into the cylinder ports. A 4 stroke has mechanical vlaves. In a round about way, they do the same basic thing. The valve opens, lets fuel in, the valve colses, trapping the fuel.
If you want/need more info, just pm me. I will be happy to go into more detail.
Reeds can make a HUGE difference in engine performance. Why do you thing the make reeda/cages ranging up into the mid hunderds of $$$'s.

not all 2 strokes have to have reeds, older 2 strokes did not have anything but a rubber boot and an open hole straight to the piston.
