how do you set the timing and what should it be

I would get a shop manual if I was you but here goes. remove valve cover and engine plugs on left engine case. put motor at top dead center by centering the timing mark on the flywheel in the top plug hole. remove chain tensioner. unbolt cams, look at cams from chain side and line up the arrows so that they are flush with the top edge of the head with the cam lobes at 10 and 2 o'clock with chain on the sprockets with all the chain slack on the intake side of the motor. there should be vertical arrows pointing up on the sprockets. there should be 15 pins in the chain between the arrows counting the pins the arrows are pointing at.
put it back together and remember to reset the tensioner before you try to put it back in.
