does this look out of ordinary. it has been making a loud ticking noise, and not like the normal tick, its is really loud.

We wouldn't be able to tell from that picture, the head generally has to be spec'd out to tell if it's bad.

How much time do you have on it?

i have about 200 hours on it, but thats estimated, i dont really know how to get the specs or pull it apart, i just pulled it off to see if it was really trashed, do the colors of the valves look good to you?

i dont know if i am running a little lean or not, i think i am pretty good

It looks like it is burning the way it should.

If you have 200 hours on it than i'm can safely say you probably need a rebuild even if that isn't your problem. But it probably is going to be.

how is the spec. clearance on those valves are u close to the smallest shim?

try to put some wd-40 threw the ports and see if it leaks threw the valves...

at least some ways to tell how ur valves are...

if its a loud ticking noise, i will bet you that one of your valve cotters or something to do with the valve came loose. I'd just say that its time to freshen up that head! haha

other than it look'n a bit on the rich side (rich being the safer side).... I'd say that I don't see anything wrong where your getting valve to piston contact.

With over 200hours on it, you need a rebuild for sure...

Plus, the cam chain at 200hours of runtime is whipped,... check for any cam chain link binding...

If you want to see a head that is really bad to compare ask Chino to post some pics. He has my head that was never shimmed after the HRC kit was put in and has a couply hundred hours on it. Maybe you can take your valves out and compare the seats.

well to answer all of everyones question. the bike is a 05. its shims are pretty small at 125, and 135. i dont think anything is wrong with the cam chain, but i am going to go out and double check that.

thanks all.

well i just checked most of the chain and it seems ok. i sprayed wd 40 into the intake port and it leaks through some.

well i think i found out what was wrong with my quad still not sure, but i pulled the cylinder and i wiggled my crank back and forth, and i can move it side to side about 1/4 ". so i think something is wrong there, also here is a picture of my cylinder, i think it still has good crosshatching, what do you think? do you think it might be glazed?

If you're holding the small end of the crank, it should move side to side some. The way to check the big end of the crank is to insert a feeler gauge between the crank and the big end of the rod. There should be some clearance--the spec can be found in a service manual. There should be essentially zero up and down movement detectable by hand. There's a spec for that too but it's so small it will normally feel like there is zero movement.

0.015" feeler gauge between the thrust washers and the rod or crank journel... the crankshaft is designed to move side to side (moreso on the 06 than the 04), especially without drive gear on the end of the crankshaft meshing with the clutch basket (gear)...

hey chad, are you sure that those specs are right, my service manual says that .030" is what i should be checking for. and i seem to be good on that.

my bad- great catch!... I was recalling the last time I measured and photo-shot my customers clearances....

anyway, I also had to go to the spec,. and thank you for your correction..
