View Full Version : odd starting problem
I have just finished re-assembling my 450r motor due to a broken center case from my chain flying off. Now the problem is...it will only start if I have someone pull me, it will not fire on it's own with the kickstarter. Could i have reassemble the stator incorrectly causing it to not get any spark, or what else could be going on here? Every once in a while when I'm trying to kickstart it , it will let out a huge pop but won't start. Checked the valves, they looked good. What else could it be?

Hmm I'm worried that your timing is off. Although if it runs ok after it's bump started, it shouldn't be timing. You said you checked your valves, but for what? Clearance or to see if the seats are hammered in. If your valves are starting to go, that will cause this problem with these symptoms. Give us some more info please.

How long were you down?
Could the carb need cleaning?
I was down for about a month and a half, wouldn't hurt to blast the carb out. I was wondering maybe it could be my decompressor clearance? I checked my valve clearances and they are spot on...im lost???

weak compression will make it act like that
Either the valves aren't adjusted properly or the decompression lever clearance isn't right.

Double check your timing, do a compression check, change your plug and check for air leaks. jmo

check the play in your throttle cable, should have about 1/16 play
Thanks for the replies guys, valves were spot on upon re-assembly but I must admit that i forgot to check my decompression clearance, I also put a brand new plug in it. I will take a look at the decompression mechanism and let you know how i make out thanks again.
