I have a 04 trx450r and was wondering (with reliability being the biggest issue) what piston should i get? I am good on regular oil changes and filter cleanings. Im putting in a Stage 2 Hot Cam and want to upgrade my piston while i'm at it. I just don't want to take to much reliability away. I am going to up grade my crank bearing and rod while im at it too.
Thanks,
Mike

They use 12:1 in the new 450Rs so I'd say your safe.

I went with an 11.5:1 JE in my R, I told colby at C&D to just send me whatever they had that was close to stock. I am satisfied, but if I do it again I'll go 12:1.

There is much more to this than just compression, but to answer the basic question, go to a 12:1 or 12.25:1.

I would recommend getting a piston from CP or one made by CP for a custom builder if you want all out performance. They will have a 2 ring piston. A 3 ring piston will give you a bit more life, but less performance. If you want suggestion for a specific brand that makes the best power - just ask and I'll post my recommendation about that - but, we're talking a $250 piston, so obviously budget comes into play here as well....

I bought a CP 12.1 for my 05, yet to put it in, will be doing it sometime this week I hope.
I even talked to engine builders about it before I bought it, everyone seems to say 12.1 is safe on 93 pump gas.

Since you clearly stated reliability as the biggest issue I would not recommend a 2 ring piston. A 3 ring would be the way to go. JMO.
