53 yards is pushing it. They can duck pretty quickly, even though your bow is quiet. Hope you find your buck though, good luck.

53 yards wasnt the problem, them being spooked was. i dont think he jumped the string, i think i hit a rib because of the loud whack the hit made. i searched enough to know i wont be finding him but it wont be the first time Ive seen them later in the season healed up. he made it far enough without leaving a trace of blood that im confident he will be ok....might be sore but back in action soon:p
i practice at 80 yards and under and can place an arrow where i want it at 80 yards(to many years shooting competitions...lol) but i only shoot that far in a field and use my laser range finder. a bad shot is a bad shot at any distance however. lets hope tonight goes better:p

I wouldn't even shoot at anything with a shotgun any more than 100.

We had a BIG buck walk across the front yard last night, couldn't tell how many points but it had a BIG body and a huge rack. I'm guessing its either an amazing 6 or a decent 8.

Man Kansas deer taste amazing, I just ate some fried deer steaks, vegetable soup w/ deer meat. My dad busted a 230lb 12 point...unfortunatly he didn't see the monster that's been lurking around, bigger than his 28 point, he wants that one for the wall :p. This one just goes on the string.
Anyway, Pappy!! Kill a big one!

Yea, tonight that little doe i have been taking pictures of came in, there were a lot more deer running around us, we're thinking of moving the ladder stand to the area they seem to come in from.
We had a staring contest with the little doe tonight, we both about started laughing, the little thing was making some funny faces and what not trying to figure out what the two things up in the tree were lol.
As you can see shes still pretty young.

On my way home from a friends tonight i'm approaching my driveway when i see something in the grass, 4 or so deer just laying in the grass, i stoped and shut the truck off real fast. Turned my lights on, 3 of them got up, looked at me and ran. But there was one left still just laying there.Looked like it might of had 1" spikes. But it would not move, it was like it didn't even see me. So i started making whisspy noises at it to see if it would look. Nothing. So i made more noise, nothing. I stick my arms out the door and start clapping as loud as i could nothing. Then i was like YAH and it slowly looked, at me. Got up, Looked at me again and trotted off...It was really weird.
Although we have tornado warning going on right now and its over 70 degrees right now. I think it has a lot to do with it, the storms especially.
Pappy
10-19-2007, 04:25 PM
we got caught in this damn T storm tonight:p
I was helping cody get in his stand when I looked behind me and caught a decent buck diddy bobbin' across the ridge about 60 yards from us:p
About an hour later I saw cody stand up and I started watching behind him. I saw a buck but couldnt see which one it was. It worked his way around CJ but never gave him a shot. It was at about 35 yards when the T storm hit and he walked off into the bottom. We are soaked...lol

well, we are almost two weeks into the season, and ive passed up a ton of deer looking for the big ones. i did shoot two, however after exhaustive blood trailing i did not find either. both appeared to be decent hits, but thankfully i dont think either was the big boys i was after, both were mid sized 8's. damn deer are proving to be tough to track here thanks to fat clogging the holes (only thing i can figure since we have been seeing that even with rifle shots:eek2: )

we waited about 30 minutes before going after her, envision me running down a creek chasing her with a hatchet in my hand. i threw the hatchet, hit her in the back of the head, knocked her down, grabbed the hatchet on the run and when she got up I hit her in the back of the head effectively ending the chase:p ryan and my wife were on the ridge above me making indian war noises:scary:LMAO

Well i just got back from my couse deer hunt late last night. all in all it was a great hunt i saw plenty of deer to make me happy. First morning i saw two bucks a spike and a nice forkhorn that has the capability of being nice in a couple of years. i passed them up and headed to my night spot and started glassing a far hill and spotted two does and a decent buck from what i could tell i made a stalk to within 500 yards and established that he was a shooter so i stalked him and rangefinded him at 304 yards and took my shot and and my trusty savage .308 dropped him on the spot. It was a nice 3x4 with eyeguards and should score in the mid to high 90's. If you don't know the world record couse deer scores only 144 the couse deer down here dress out to about 90 pounds if you got a big one. well there is my deer hunt story for the year and cant wait till next year to have another shot at a bigger buck.

That's funny that is the main area I have been seeing all the deer. One of my first stops in the morning is Laytonsville ES. I'm usually there around 7:30 and the bean feilds have been loaded. I saw 3 or 4 nice bucks in the area early this week. I might have actually seen that deer this morning. I could see a rack sticking up out of a picked bean field about 80 yards from Warfield road, but couldn't tell if it was fresh or exactly how big it was.

I was wondering if i would see any bucks tonight. I had been in codys stand for about 15 minutes when i heard something behind me, it was a button buck fawn. he walked under me and started eating apples, then went on up to the other apple pile. i was expecting to see the doe at any time, and i turned to see where she was. when i looked back, the little buck was at full alert staring at me. i reckoned he had seen me and he started stomping his foot:ermm: about that time, i saw white under my feet and it was a damn cat:grr: the little buck snorted and walked back towards me and the cat. when he went behind a big oak, i hissed and when the cat looked up i moved my foot and it hauled *** outta there, and that sent the little buck trotting off.
so just at dark, i looked behind me and saw a big bodied deer coming out of a blow down. he approached from downwind and when he was 6 or so yards behind me to my right he tilted his head up. i had a buck bomb out upwind and had made a mock scrape before climbing in the stand about 30 yards upwind and hung up a drip bag.
he turned and took 4 or 5 steps away then put his nose back up in the air. i geuss that scent was to much for him and he turned again coming infront of me. when he was behind some trees i drew and when he stepped out the other side i sent a broadhead through his shoulder. i heard him go down about 100 yards down the ridge.
im pretty happy, good food for the family and another solid rack for the wall.

Yea, I went out with my dad tonight. But I left not long after we got out there, camo pants are super thin, just wasn't dressed for the amount of wind that was out there and I was shaking uncontrollably so I said I can't sit out here like this I'll just end up sick. So I went in and my dad went to his other stand, he had an 8pt come in he said. He told me he told himself if it gave him a good shot he would take it, but it came in broadside and was perfect, he drew back and aimed and few times decided not to shoot him, I think he wants that 10pt more and he said he wants me to have a chance at a bigger deer than the little 4 pt i shot during the youth hunt.

nice gun choice pappy, he'll love that 7mm-08... i shoot a 270, but would rather shoot my lil bro's browning a-bolt 7mm-08 any day. he wont have any worry's with this thing packin the punch to a deer. i shot a spike with my bro's gun last year at probably 180-200 yards and cut him a flip like he was standin right in front of me.
how long does yall's season last. bow season here started oct. 13th and goes all the way to jan. 31st

we hunt two states and rifle or shotgun is used depending on which area we hunt. here at home its all rifle.
bow season starts sept 15th in one state, oct 13th in another, rifle nov 19th and 27th and all firearms seasons (rifle & muzzleloader) end dec 31st in wv and some time in jan in MD

Ken - Did Cody have any luck after we left Saturday?
I've checked out the photos of that buck you just got - real nice. Pretty heavy compared to what I have heard about deer in that area.
By the way - Ty loves the bike. Keep it touch and let me know about Breezewood or getting the boys together at your place to ride. After the season of course.
Good luck with the hunting.

ryan and cody live to hunt squirells, but during bow season we dont shoot any guns here. so they set out some body grip traps and started getting some of the little rascals around the house.
this is ryans first squirell, he is stoked that he trapped it instead of shooting it

Ryan was the man today at the youth hunt, scoring a nice 7 point at 8:15 this morning.

cody had seen this buck, but held off on the shot due to it being on top of a small rise and we were on the other side on an oak flat. ryan backed it up by killing a button buck at dark. (they were allowed 1 buck and 2 does)
i hunted with cody tonight and we saw a small 8 pointer but it was to far up a hill to safely shoot

we had a total blast, and while cody did not get anything, our rifle season starts next monday so he should finally get into them

Thats cool, it must be nice that all those bucks are still in your area lol.
I'm shooting my gun once more before gun season to be 100% sure I'm happy with the scope. We have been seeing an 8 pt almost everyday hopefully he won't be shot in the morning :)
