Was just out fooling around with the new Nikon D80 tonight playing with shutter priority mode. The fan in the following picture is spinning at full speed. Needless to say, I am excited about heading to the track tomorrow...as a picture taker instead of a rider though.

I have a canon A540, but my gf has a canon A560....and hers is wayyyy better than mine.

Canon and Nikon make great cameras...everything else tends to be mediocre.

My minimum choice was the Nikon D40x. I opted to spend the extra for the D80 because...well, Pappy recommended it since it has more options for lenses.

I am completely in the beginner phase of this. I am thrilled with how complicated it all is though...much to learn so I can see why it takes years and years to perfect the art.

no flash. lol. but a 2nd light source in the room besides the computer screen
Aperture Priority
ISO 400 maybe 600?
spot metering

I was actually shooting at 800 but then Connie got home and wanted the lights on. :eek2:

2 off camera flashes, metered manually(i shoot only in full manual) and fired remotely. your D80 has this abiltity, just save up for a sb-800 flash (skip the sb-600)

with a flash, a cheap light stand and umbrella, you can be taking pictures that will make you smile;)

Cool picture - I just picked up a D40 last night... I've been playing with it all day today.

No crazy pictures yet, just messing around and getting familiar with it.

My first question...

I already know I will need a tripod to get some crazy "long exposure" shots to eliminate camera shake...

...but for the hand held shots, I assume you treat it like shooting a gun - exhale before you hit the release? Any other suggestions on proper "holding" of the camera to yield the best photo?
