I've been looking for a new truck for quite some time now and have had my mind set on getting a cummins. well today i was driving around and seen a 02 dodge ram 1500 for 7500 with 108,000 miles on it. now i really dont want a gasser nor do i want one with that many miles on it but i really like the truck im just not really sure if this is a good deal or not, im sure i could talk them down some though. what im wondering is, would this be a good buy? would any of you buy a truck with this many miles on it? i know that wouldnt hardly be anything for a diesel but thats quite a bit for a gasser. im just thinkin maybe i shouldnt get a cummins right now until a little later on. well any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

personally I wouldnt buy a truck with that many miles. Only way I would and then I probably still wouldnt is if it was a F250 around 02 or 03 with 108K miles, then I would consider it.

look it over and determine whether it was used for work or a commuter first.

Just make sure you check everything over well, test drive it.

Ask the owner if the transmission has ever been replaced...If not, look forward to replacing it soon if you buy it. But then you could put a stick in it, which I always thought would be cool.

If it's the 360 motor, look at bad gas mileage. Even with a programmer on my friends Dodge (Ebay programmar...Sweet little knob in his cab), he only got about 14-15 on a good day. But that truck does have some balls.

don't be afraid of the miles. That motor will be good for well over 200,000 if it was taken care of. My 01 dodge has 155,000 and we are heading across country to little sahara next month...800 miles one way.

Do ask about the tranny. They will usually go out around 100,000. If it has been rebuilt then you are fine.

The money you will save buying a gasser you can use to replace the motor if it goes out.

You also failed to mention...is it 4x4, ext cab? If it is then you are getting it at a good price.

good luck.

I got a 98 5.9 with 135000 miles and it runs awsome. Gas mileage is not the worst out there. deffinately check on the tranny, I had to put a Jasper in at 115,000mi. Other than that they are great trucks. if it's clean 7500 is goodfor a 2WD, if it's 4WD it's awsome.

Stay away from it... Dodge = bad gas milage, no power, and unreliable. Stick with a GM product. Either that or a f-250 with the 7.3 liter powerchoke... The 6.0 fords are junk too... The best thing on the market now is the duramax..

i'm pretty sure that ford doesn't even offer the 6.0 anymore i'm pretty sure its 6.3 now but yeah the dodges you have to watch out for the tranny's on but take care of it and that motor will last a long time i'd say go for it

I beg to differ, Gas engine to gas engine I would take a Dodge anyday. Yes I have owned Chevies and Fords already and I was not impressed by them.

I agree with eviltanker, I will take a Ford or Dodge over GM anyday. GM's ride good but their motors are only good for about 100,000.

...and what are you smoking????

That's the biggest line of BS in this thread.

My family has owned several GM trucks with a couple past 200,000 miles with zero issues. The item we usually replace is the alternator and thats well into 100,000 mile range - other than that it was regular maint items.

The 350 V8 is one of the best small block gassers for a 1/2 pickup - especially during the mid to late 90's.

The 5.3, 6.0 and 8.1 have a great track record as well in the NBS pickups! I know MANY people with 100k-200k on the new engines with no problems at all! I just sold my 5.3 that was over 7 years old - ZERO problems during ownership!

122,000 on my 4.3 V6, and I am told it will outlast me. Although my tranny isnt so hot, NV3500 and reverse isn't in the best working order...but it hasn't completly left me down yet

Don't let one apple spoil the bunch.

Is that the old body style or the newer one?

Sounds like exactly what my buddy is looking for. PM me some info, he is ready to buy. The only problem is that it cant have more than like 80k miles, because he is borrowing a little money from his dad, and his dad is an idiot, and wont let him get a truck with over 80k.

I have 106k on my 6.0 and its still running great! The oil is barely dirty when I change it at 3000 miles...

I only asked because 99-03 models tended to have problems with them more often than other years.

Or that's the case with all my friends who have one.
