Is this ok to do this? Im about to buy an o-ring chain for my 250r and I know its going to be too long but it says I can shorten it if I need to.

go to local retailer and get a Breaker (http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/chain_breaker/)

sounds good, my brother may have one since he's a mechanic and he fools with chains sometimes.

don't waste ur money on a breaker. grind down the pin so it's flush with the link, then use a punch and smack the pin out.

You shouldn't be sizing your chain in the field.

If you were doing something like a Baja or Desert race that requires you to carry extra parts in the field in case of breakdown, the chain should be already sized before you go.

make a link out of a small chunk of barb wire fence and limp off seconds before the big farmer guy can catch up to you.

(dont ask, that was a long day)

lol i'm not the one to size a chain in the feild but have broken a couple. i always carry whats left of a 120 link, a chain breaker and a master link.

ever repair a chain sitting on ya arse in a creek bed 10 miles from n e where? lmao

I use the same method. Works great especially if you have a grinder. Doesn't make sense to me to buy a chain breaker(they're application specific) when you can spend the money on a cheap grinder that can be used for many things.(buffing, grinding, wire wheeling, etc)

I used to run a 14/39, don't quote me on it but I believe you'll need a 94 link chain with an 89 length swinger.

yeah you should have a bunch of links left. thinking 88 is around 94 and 86 is around 98.

and for field repair you just need a couple master links and maybe a 1/2 link, unless you found a new way to break a chain....

What kind of chain is it? If it's a DID 520ATV X-ring, I'll buy the extra links from you.

How many extra links do you need? I have purchased 3 DID 520 X-rings and have plenty of extra lengths if you need some. I can email you some pics if you want. LMK...

As far as cutting chains, I use a Dremel and smooth down one size after messing with the length that I want - make sure you have enough slack before you cut it too short. After I smooth one side of it, I will take a crappy screwdriver and punch down the crevice of the chain with a rubber mallet and it falls apart.

I wouldn't touch a chain I didn't know the tensile strength of. That might be the chain that breaks your case!

The chain I'm running right now is Primary Drive 520H gold chain. It hasn't hardly stretched since new. It has a tensile strength of around 8500 lbs.

i may just keep it and get a D.I.D. chain. I found one on ebay for $79 thats a 110 link.

Look through Rocky Mtn. They have DID chains, an atv x-ring in my catalog is listed at $70 for a 110 link. If you spend another $30 shipping is free.

Not a bunch, anywhere between 2 and 10 links. I'll take the longest section you have.

I want to experiment with a couple different sprocket sizes, but I need to adjust the chain length. I'm perfectly willing to use 2 master links to experiment with. Once I find the combination I want, I'll order a Sidewinder set.
