Does changeing the cam chain require splitting the cases?

NO you will not have to split your cases, but will have to remove your clutch cover and remove some of your clutch parts and gears. Not a hard job at all with the right tools and a manuel

And make sure when you do this that you DONT jump a few teeth on the cam sproket, How long has it been since you changed it? When i talked to Tom up at TC racing he said the 400ex Cam chain is very good and only needs to be replaced ever 3-4 years, If that... Mine was a 00 mildly built with stock chain and it was fine when i pulled it apart a few months ago to swap cams. Just some input for u.

very well could be, But befor you rip into it i would definatly check a few other things off first just to make 100% sure, Like valve adjustment. Unless you are 100% sure on it being a streched cam chain.

Ok then, I had a 99 as well. I'm thinking while your at it you might want to check the condition of the cam chain tensioner as well which is the device mid way up the cylinder on the clutch side with the two 8mm bolts.
