Kinda worried about it since we head to Utah on Thurs. for WORCS, but after reading up on her symptoms, looks like she might have a torn ACL??

I was wondering who all here has had that and how long did it take to heal up?
I slightly tore mine a few months ago, but hers is worse .

Her knee she said"gives out" on her without notice when she walks.
Ive got her on ice,Ibuprophen and just chillin today. She rode at the dunes yesrday and said it didnt hurt really riding as much as just walking, but she also rode alot more leisurely too.
She also wasn't racing on rough, whooped out sections either. lol
I dont have much experiance with knees, but if its not better in a week, shes off to a specialist I guess.

She done it while in PE the 1st week back to school. :(

She is dead set shes racing, I guess we will play it by ear.

Hope it's not too serious:(

What ever it is make sure she lets it heal completely before going at it again.

Poor Kelsey.....she just can't catch a break this year can she?

Tell her I said that I really hope she's able to race at Monticello, but to ABSOLUTELY make sure not to push it. It may just mess up her racing even more if she forces herself to race on a bad knee....

Being a parent, we tend to be worry warts sometimes.. lol

But I do know shes bull headed too and I would hate for her knee to give out while racing and create something worse to happen.
Ill see how bad shes limping around this week and see how it goes.
Shes got it wrapped today and it taken it easy .

Shes gonna FLIP OUT if she has to sit the side lines one more race . :(
Thanks, I do agree though .
Keep your fingers crossed ;)

Have any of you had this injury before?
I guess theres 3 stages of what kind of damage it can be. Hers sounds like a stage 2.
Heres another article I read

coming from somebody who torn there acl believe me shes lucky and did not tear it atleast i dont think so...omg does it suck you like 95 percent of the time sneed surgery which i did hours of mri's a wheelchair omg it sucks she prolly might have stretched a ligament which is causing her knee to "give out" i would deff go get it looked at a.s.a.p because it can get alot worse if she does one wrong thing it can cause serious damage it can take up to months to heal srry for all the bad news i jus wanna tell you how it is or atleast how it was for me hope she gets better:(

From what I understand there is "stages" to a tear and hers is not the worst stage, IF thats what it is for sure ...
Im pretty certain it is a tear, or at least a bad strain of the ligament like you said .That is why Im not going to panic and just wait it out a bit and see how she feels over the next week .I could feel mine tear when I done it .I turned w/o lifting my foot causing my leg to go the opposite way of my body. Not too bright!! lol But I read thats very, very common...
I also took her off PE for this week and if they want to throw a fit, Ill be happy to go talk to them about it. Her school can be funny about things like that so we may need a Dr.'s note regardless.
I think Ive asked her at least 100 times today if i feels any better or worse.. :p

I keep getting this look  lol

I cant help it .. thats what Moms do!:D :p
I know her well enough to tell if shes lying about how bad it feels, so we just sit and wait.

I'm not so sure.

She's had a string of bad luck, I can certainly understand how frustrated she is. But that shouldn't push her into a bad decision.

This truly might be one of those "better safe than sorry" situations. Do you let her knee limit her racing for the next few weeks, or do you risk further injury and have it limit her racing the rest of her life?

I think taking her off PE for a while is a good decision.

i've had the same basic problem with my knee before and its just a stretched ligament and i've also torn my acl and it hurts like hell so she'd be in a lot of pain if she tore it and mine wasn't completely torn it was only about 50% and between the surgery and pt i was out of commision for about a month and a half so get it checked out as soon as possible

maybe try an ace bandage on it or a knee brace you can pick up from riteaid or cvs. apply b4 the race.

Shes been kepping it wrapped (except at bedtime) and wears a six,six ,one knee pads when riding. IF she races , Ill have to keep her iceing in bewteen races. She races basic all 4 races in one day.:eek2:
She will have to most likely skip the Team race this round.

Oh boy.....I had surgery back in May for a torn left ACL. It wasn't all to bad. Very painful when it happened, but wasn't all to painful after surgery as long as you didn't put weight on it. After the incident couldn't walk on it for about a week. When I started to walk on it (B4 surgery yet), I couldn't straighten my leg all the way or bend it all the way. It was kinda weird cuz I had an older bro tear his in football back when he was in Highschool and he said he felt like he could play the next week. So in my honest opinion you should get it checked out b4 she possibly tears up her cartilage and other ligaments. I know she doesn't want to sit out anymore, but I would rather sit out than do some more possible damage. I absolutely hated being a spectator at the races. I just went and did some real riding this past weekend since my surgery and it feels great but I don't think I am going to attend the last few races just cuz I don't want to push it. If you get it checked out and she has to have surgery, make sure she does as much of the physical therapy as possible. I did and don't regret it. I can run and bike just fine. And the knee feels great too...even at 240lbs!!

Good luck
Aaron

Hi Tina,
Sorry to hear about the injury:( I tore my ACL this summer and had it replaced. Here is the story with a ACL injury. First they do not heal. Sorry but its true. If her knee is popping out, she will need surgery. Sorry again. If you decide not to do it, she is going to have problems later in life. Every time it pops out it can cause more damage to the rest of the knee.
The good news is it leaves almost no scar, It can be as good as new, but it will require lots of rehab and time, 6 months to a year.
Kills me to tell you this but the first few days after surgery are pretty tough. I was off crutches after a couple of weeks and it gets better all the time.
If you have any questions at all PM me and I'll call you up.
Don't worry kids are amazing.
tony

Those hurt like hell. I thought my Dr. was gonna get kicked in the teeth when he was drilling my bone with that stuff! lol
Ive already had a life time dose of those .

a freind of mine mentioned that it could be her MCL as well??
She feels about 60% as of yesterday,School said NO PEE ABSOLUTELY until she feels better,so that went good.... The PE teacher had some knee wobble and said some down time helpd and shes hasnt had issues since so I guess depending on the diagnosis it could be ok-Were staying positive!

do you know what she exactly did that started to make it hurt?and what kind of pain is she in?

i thought i tore my acl in basketball practice last year after i jumped to save a ball and landed akward....it was just like hers, when iwalked my right knee would give out, especially wheni was goin up steps(kinda made me look like i fell up the steps:rolleyes: )and it would give out if i stood on it to long with to much pressure on it.So i went to the doctors and he checked it and said i pulled a muscle or ligament(cant remember which one)and bust open a pouch with liquid the reduces the friction from when you walk the knee and what ever bone thats connected to rubs together. And thats what was causing me so much pain and cuasing it to give out...so a couple steroid shots inthe *** and it was all better lol:D  ...doubt it's the same thing but who knows.....

oo yea hope she gets better cuz i know how she feels not being able to ride

Damn lilQJ....i can sympathize.

I was running with the XC team yesterday and we had to do stadium steps at the end of a 5 mile run. My knee gave out on the second set. It feels like something is grinding inside of it.

BTW-we had already ran a mile warm up and did 3 sets of stadiums before the 5 mile run...:D

She didnt really say when she done it or how...But I talked to freind of mines whos Dad is a Dr. and he said hes not for sure since she hasnt had test, but she porbably didinttear the ACL, but probably more less stretched it or pulled it and just to keep doing what we have been unless it worsens.

Well... She is dead set on racing , we leave for Utah in the morning. We will see how Friday practice goes.
I hope I have great things to write about in the Race Coverage section from the week end, she is overdue for some GOOD THINGS to happen to before the season is over . :)

I have a friend that tore his acl racing motocross. Its been a lil over a year and it still bothers him to ride even with a knee brace. Id say you better get her some really good braces for her knees since shes gonna need the extra insurance now.
