View Full Version : So is the 450R suspension swap really worth it?

Well it's about time to start replacing parts that I want to replace, not broken parts on my rebuild, and I see the sticky up top about the 450R shocks on the 400EXs...

I have read a few reviews but they really don't help out that much because they seem to contradict themselves...some even mention YFZ450 shocks?

Let's hear your opinions from people that have run 450R shocks, are running 450R shocks, and are running aftermarkets (would prefer to hear guys opinions with Elkas too)

I am either going with the cheaper 450R alternative, or just going with Elkas...from what I've read I really don't think it's worth it to go with the 450R shocks...I have read they are very stiff on the 400s.

Also, can you run extended a-arms with the 450R shocks?

I have elka's all the way around. IMO i'd find something else. I have 2,355.00 into long travel fronts and rear, plus the rear linkage, not overly impressed yet. But i only have about 12 hours of only track time on them. I don't think they are dialed in quite right. Heard great things about 450R front shocks and having them revalved through GT Thunder and having your stock rear shock revalved also. Hope this helps.

I think for the money the 450R shocks are the best VALUE out there. Key word is value. To get them to perform correctly, you have to have them re-valved and re-sprung by either Derisi or GT Thunder. They are able to shorten the compressed length of the stock 450R shock so they are close enough for the 400EX. For around $600 bucks you will have a high quality, fully adjustable reservoir shock.

Are they perfect? No they are still a little long to get the maximum suspension performance but they pretty good despite this length issue.

I have (2) sets of 450R shocks setup differently and I like them for me. I have one set fo shocks with a progressive rate single spring and another with a dual rate spring set up. I'm still trying to decide which set I like better.

i have plus 2's with 450 shocks with the preload out of them. they work ok. better then stock. i dont have the money to buy some good axis , fox etc shocks and i dont think elkas are that great imo.

Is there a difference in cost between the dual spring and progressive spring?

I am 235#, I run stock 450r shocks on my 04 ex, they are great for going big, they dont really soak up much at low speeds, but overall I would take them over stock ANY day.

So what you are saying is that I don't need to buy a 450r rear along with the fronts because they can revalve my stock 400 rear??? And it will be just a good and the 450r rear??

The 450R rear will not work. I think most here understand and the topic has always centered around the 450R fronts.

So the 450R FRONTS can only be used? Then I will just go with an Elka rear. This sounds pretty promising, sounds like a good setup for the money.

i wouldn't even do that. I would just get your rear shock re-valved. It will be just as good as an elka shock. then run the 450 fronts

My buddy bought a set of 450R fronts and we installed cheap alba +2 arms on the front. Recently sent the whole works off to GT Thunder for rebuild/revalve and new rear linkage.

This thing rides so nice it is sick!!! Talk about handling! It will turn on a dime, leaving change!

For the money...you can't touch this suspension!

Please explain why a 400ex shock will not work on the rear of a 450r. I was just going to buy a tcs rear 400ex shock for my 450r and now i read this.
