Will this work in my 1989 trx250r motor or is the esr cr250 ignition system upgrade made specially for the 250r? If this doesnt fit is it worth the $550 to upgrade?

Ebay item number: 150155250883

Thanks alot for all the help

It will work but you will need the adapter plate. ESR supposedly sells only the 01 but the only difference between the two is some timing changes. I have a 00 it will work and is digital.

So if I buy the adapter plate from esr you're saying that this will mount? How much is this adaptor plate?
Thanks alot

Yeah it will mount, most of the stators are the same. The 00 and 01 are the only ones with compatible plugs and everything.

Those adapter plates run around 80 bucks from ESR or CT.
The CT Racing plate has more adjustment on it than the ESR one.

What do you mean by adjustments? Is it just timing adjustments, if so how hard is it too tune it in to run good, and can I do it myself?
Thanks alot for all the help I really appreciate it.

Timming adjustments

The ESR plate only has a hole where the bolts go through the plate to mount it to the engine.
The CT plate has slots for more adjustment.
On the CR ignition system, that stator plate has slots on it so adjustments can be made.

What you will find unless by chance some machining changes have been made, the ESR CR ignition adapter plate with only the three holes to mount the plate to the engine, with the CR stator plate itself rotated counter clockwise as far as it will go & locked down the timming will still be advanced around 10* at TDC.
The CT plate with the slots cut into the mounting plate you can retard the timming if need be done.

So what your saying is that if I buy the esr it will bolt right on like the stock plate or am I completely off base here? Im just a little confused with the wording that you used? Also will this give me gains performance wise or will this just make my 250r run better?

Thanks for all the help and sorry for all the dumb questions

Yes, that it right what you are thinking.
The ESR plate is machined to fit right in place on the TRX case just like the stock TRX ignition stator plate.
But, the ESR plate only has three round holes in it just like the stock stator plate where it mounts to the case, so theres no adjustment on the adapter plate.
On the CT Racing adapter plate, those three mounting holes are slotted, not just a round hole, so you can adjust the timming at the adapter plate.

So from what I understand, the only differences in the CR ignitions throughout the years is the timing variances? And ESR recommends the 2001 CR ignition, because it has optimal timing for the TRX? Also, is that why their plate isn't adjustable like CT's, because it is meant for the 2001 CR ignition and no others? I'm looking at a 1999 CR ignition, is this something to consider buying, or will it not work properly? Thanks in advance!

The ESR website says what years the adapter plate is good for and I beleive that it will work for the 1999. To make sure go to their website.

From ESR:
BILLET ADAPTER PLATE ALLOWS FOR
INSTALLATION OF A LATE MODEL CR250
IGNITION SYSTEM ('92-'01) ON ALL TRX & ATC 250R

Obviously this will work with the 1999 CR ignition, but are the timing curves of the '99 ignition more or less desireable than the '01 that is recommended? What are the differences between the years?

2001 and 2000 CR250 ignitions are digital. 2001 has the best ignition curve. 1999-1992 CR250 ignitions are analog.

Best as I can remember, I beleave some 2004 model CR ignitions have been used. Long as the CR stator plate has the two bolt mounting holes, just like the older models, it more than likely will work.

The main reason for changing out the old stock TRX ignition system, & replacing it with the CR unit, is to get rid of the problems you will encounter with the old anilog TRX system.

The new CR system being Digital, means it will spark at the same time every rotation of the flywheel.
It makes a lot of difference when you set the ignition timming & it sparks each & every time at the same time. The old anilog kinda jumped around when it sparked. You probably couldn't see it with your eyes, what was happening, but you could on a machine that checked ignition systems.

Any of the CR250R ignition systems below the 2000 year models, will be anilog sparked just like the old TRX ignition, but, even though the CR system is anilog, it is a far better system than the old TRX.

So, can an ignition from a 2002 be used or not? I have a chance to get one, but I want to make sure it'll work first.

Interesting reading, need a flywheel, stator pick up coil and the coil and CDI, went shopping on line for cost, ESR pricing is very fair.

Is there anyway to use lights with a cr ignition set up?
