I'm looking to get a cam for my '07 400ex. Is there a best cam out there or are they all mostly the same ? also how much power difference does it make? is there a noticeable difference ?

i suggest you do a hotcam stage 2 and a wiseco high comp piston (11:1). your motor will come alive! and doing these things you will not have to worry about over heating. cams are awsome.

cams make a hell of a lot of torque. My brother put a HotCam stage 1 in and when you hit the gas it pulls instant. You have to really make sure your timing is right and everything is tight because he ended up blowin the motor and having to get a new 1 because it was that bad. Web cams I would say are good because thats the cam in the 450r HRC kit but a lot of people have the HotCams

I'm not sure about the newer 400's but when I built mine for XC racing nothing compared to the TC national XC cam (926 grind??)and a JE piston to bump the motor to 416. Keep the compression low to keep it more reliable and not need high octain gas. This setup had NO problems with 426 or 440ex's.:muscle:

thanks again for all your guyses help. i ride mx. so would you be able to put in just a cam and run your stock piston or do you have to do a piston job too? also which is better for mx, stage 1 or stage 2 ?

i would do a stage 2. you dont have to do piston but i suggest it. it will wake up your motor and its not to costy

imo the TC Racing cam is one of the best cams for the 400ex

imho.

the stage 2 hotcam and the webcam are both good, in my bike the web ran better and harder up the hill than the hotcam, on flat ground, about 6's imo.

ok the stage 1 cam is for low end power and the stage 2 cam is for mid to top end power and the stage 3 cam is for mostly stroker engines

the stage 1 makes low end b/c it has more lift and less duration.

the stage 2 cam has less lift and more duration.

and the stage 3 i don't know much about.

if there is anything else i can help you with just ask

if you dont have a big bore or anything get a stage 1. stage 1 is for engines with like intake and exhaust. stage 2 is like for more modifyed engines and satge 3 is for highly modifyed engines and big bores

not true stage 1 and 2 can be used with a stock engine just stage 2 works even better with more modified engines

all i have done to my motor is slip-on ironman pipe and jets of course. so should i get the stage 1 or stage 2 ?

08-29-2007, 06:48 PM
as far as I know stage 1 is for stock engines with aftermarket exhaust and more air flow. stage 2 is for a quad with more modifications and stage 3 is for highly modifyed and big bores.

I would go with a stage 1 but from what others are saying stage 2 will work 2. I'm just looking at reliability, cams can blow up your motor much easier and you cant say no they are fine. I would go with stage 1 if anything
