I have a Honda with a 490 kit on it and there is absolutely no comparison. I will post more after i get some time on it.

I tried to post some pics of the 525 but they were too big.I got mine from ellicott city motorsports in md.They are only getting 3 and i think the other 2 are 450's. I am going to try and get it out today.two of the salesmen from the dealership went to the demo and rode both the 450 and 525.They are both bike guys so I am buying it on a leap of faith. Both of them said the 450 was really fast but the 525 scared them a little.Sounds just right to me! I am a 40 year old intermediate rider so you will get a pretty good comparison on it.I had a 06 ltr450,and an 04 yfz.I have been riding and racing quads and bikes my whole life. I was not in the market for another quad, but when i saw it sitting on the showroom floor,I had to have it.It looks BAD. I am heading out now to pick it up. more too follow......

carnutvic

Well just got back from my first ride on the 525.Let me tell you the hype is real. This thing has power like you would not believe. The steering effort is really light.Stoppies on this are 1 finger easy.the suspension is stiff right now, after it breaks in I will see where the clickers are set and play with them. The best thing about it is that it is really light.Getting in and out of reverse is lightning fast.there is a little lever on the clutch resevoir that you pull in and go down 1 from first.super easy, super fast.I took it on a 20 mile ride this morning that has a good mix of tight stuff and fast fire roads.I kept it under half throttle and man is this thing fast. The power is instant-just like the ltr but twice as much bottom end. 4th gear downhill wheelies are no problem. The seat feels like an mx bike.It is long and narrow. You really sit on top of it and its a little strange at first. It transitions from right to left really quickly. If you like to ride wheelies, this is the quad for you.

carnutvic

The gas cap is the coolest thing you have ever seen. You push a little orange button in the middle and turn it a quarter turn and its off.Sweet.I put a full tank of gas thru it already. Its getting even faster.

Put my second tank off gas through it.BIG POWER.If you are just interested in a really fast quad you are gonna love it.
Now that i have some hours on it here are some more observations. It is small.I am 5'6" 150 and its a little cramped.I think the bar clamp can be flipped. Reverse operation is so easy to use.You do not have to take your hands off the bars.Best I have ever used. It is really quiet. It sounds like a stock z400 at idle but really barks when you put the wood to it. Fifth gear is nuts.My seat of pants feel puts it at least 7-10 mph faster than an ltr.If you like bottom end power, you will be in heaven.I tend to run my quads or bikes a gear high and use the clutch to get a good drive. It is almost too much power(almost).I think what makes this quad so fast is that it is really light, first and second gear are really close together and it is a modern 525 motor. The jetting is spot on.It pops a little on decell, but the throttle response is awsome.

What's the actual width? I know the specs say 45" but it looks wider.

carnutvic
09-02-2007, 11:18 AM
45 in. front and 46 rear.It has a 1.5 spacer on the rear wheels and the front rims are 3+1 offset.I am going to try it widened.I hope it does not change the steering effort because that is one of the best things about it.I am pretty sure that if you flip the front wheels you are going to have to put a steering stabilizer on it.It has a big fat aluminum steering stem on it with a flat spot machined on it for a steering stabilizer.

carnutvic
09-02-2007, 11:20 AM
I am working on it now.I will post some pics of it with the wheels flipped and the spacers on the inside.

carnutvic
09-02-2007, 01:15 PM
Checked it over this morning before going out and had quite a few loose bolts. The rear axle was loose. It takes 30 sec. to tighten up the axle.Loosen the pinch bolt and turn the nut,re-tighten the pich bolt, done.
Here are some pics with the front fenders on and off,the rear spacers on the inside and the front wheels flipped. It measures 48.5 rear and 50.5 front.

50 inches is the legal race width of MX tracks and helps stability greatly.

This is going to be an awsome mx quad. The front end of this quad rocks. It really bites in the corners.towards the end of the day i added about 5 clicks to the rear compression and backed off 5 on the front. The front brakes are insane. They take a little getting used to.1 finger and really crisp. The rear is not quite as strong and i am going to have to move the lever out a little.I ran the whole track in 3rd and 4th,5th on that long straight away. You can destroy a berm in 3rd.

Great ride report and I am glad you like it! It amazes me that guys (not you) bash the Polaris with this same motor in it and say it is not that fast, but as soon as it is another company with that motor, people are in love.

carnutvic, good luck with the quad, it is definitely badazz! I would have looked into one but the price was the scary part. I love my Outlaw 525 but that KTM sure is a good looking quad! The motor is the most amazing thing about it!

Yo eerhard. You lucky dog,you get to ride in the dunes!!! the closest to me are 16 hours away.I have a 500 ho polaris and it has been a great machine. I think the biggest difference between the outlaw and the xc is the weight.I looked really hard at the outlaw and i think they are gonna sell a ton of them. what really sold me on the ktm was its light weight and how easy it is to work on.I got a smokin deal on the xc-8600 out the door.I got such a deal on it because I have been a faithfull customer to ellicott city motorsports since day one.Have you had any problems with your outlaw?

carnutvic
09-06-2007, 07:11 AM
That pic is with the wheels in the stock location.there is too much offset to run them flipped. The stems hit the calipers. It is a really stable quad considering how tall and wide the stock tires are.Its a little tough to be super aggressive in a really tacky dirt corner .it wants to bite and one wheel.I put the rear spacer on the inside of the hub and that made it much better on the mx track. The rear spacers put it out almost 3 inches wider. The front end is epic.It REALLY hooks. It will need a steering stabilizer,I am talking with one of the KTM guys and I am going to try and get them to put one on as a stock piece. The mount is already there.
The best thing about the quad is how light it is in the air and on the ground.
I think the bomb squad guys will have no problem backflipping it in stock trim.

I just fixed one of the few complaints I had about the 525.The riding cockpit is a little cramped,I flipped the handlebar mount/antivibe stem around to the front position.Big difference in the amount of room when sliding around corners and moving back and forth. There is still another adjustment on the bar clamps to move it even farther forward, but I like it where it is.It is really easy to do and makes a big difference in the feel of the machine.

Dealer called a few hours ago and said they got one and it will be ready for me tommorrow afternoon. They said they will get 4 525's for the season (Dune season) and they are a larger dealer!

Green sticker (Calif. thing), electric start, reverse! My wife is going to be so happy with her new bike!

So if you can get one grab it they may be hard to come by. Sounds like the 450 & 525 SX race bike will becoming later in the year or early next year, so you moto guys may want to wait until you see what that is about.

Got mine at Mission Motorsports in Irvine, their only one, paid MSRP.

I was at Three Brothers Racing KTM later this afternoon and they got one in yesterday and they said MSRP + tax and Licenes. They may take less, but they also only have one. They have a second store in Temecula and they have 1 new one and 2 of the demos (which will be sold as new), from the fleet of 50 or so used in the press release outing two weeks ago. They said $500 off MSRP on those, they have around 3-4 hours on them.

My buddy was to get one from KTM dealer in San Diego today, but it did not come in. They offered him $250 off MSRP when he bought a moto 2 weeks ago and he said he would take it. They are also getting a Demo in next week.

If you want one call Edquardo at 3 Brother Racing in Costa Mesa quick it will be gone by mid week I suspect.

I asked him about the 450 and he said they checked yesterday and still no word on when they will get 450's, they have known the 525's were coming for about a month. He also said they microfish on the 525 was available to them about a few weeks ago to order parts and the 450's is still not out.

Quick ride around storage parking didn't tell me much, except that it needs to be re-jetted, as it is too lean (factoy specs for green sticker emmission in CA). Three Brothers will have in next week nerfs, stabilizer and exhaust, rejet at that time.

I flipped the bar mount forward for more room. Also put the rear axel in wide position. Looked at the front wheels turned around for width, but too much stuff is hanging out there to take abuse from rocks etc..., so we flipped them back.

Very light, good power, suspension is soft. Seat is like a giant pillow, not like an KTM motorcycle seat I have ever had (they are like 2 x 4's).

Really nice quad, looking forward to a ride next week.

Hey Supercup.Congrats on your new ride.It sounds like a z400 doesn't it? I tweaked the fuel screw on the bottom of the carb to get that off throttle backfire out of it.I am at sea level so my jetting is pretty close. You won't believe how much you can adjust the suspension.

I'd be surprised to see a 525SX model......I would think that they are going to use a version of their DOHC 450, which doesn't offer a big bore size. EFI would be nice though.......I might be waiting for that of for next yeah when there are more available out west. But its defenitely the onything I'll be riding.

B&E Powersports on the eastern shore of Maryland has 5 525xcs. I was headins down to my hunt club in Cambridge and saw three of them sitting outside. I had to hang a U-turn to check them out and they had 2 more inside. They are around 9600 otd which is too steep for my blood but they are a nice looking machine.

There were only 30 quads at the press release and 20 were 525s. I know I wouldn't want one of those machines. I rode the **** out of the one I used for like 5hrs. All of them have like 5hrs on them and were beat to hell. I wouldn't buy one unless under a thousand off the price. A ton of pro riders bashing them around to their limits. 5hrs was equivalent to like 50 from a normal rider.

? For those who were at the dealer show, what are the differences between the 525 and 450 besides the motor. Any weight difference, width. . .

Must be some reason its not going to be released yet, if it is just the motor it would be out the sametime.

Anyone have solid answers?

I don't know anything about the adj. cdi.If you find more info let me know. The petcock is kinda weird. I think that with the small knob part turned up that is reserve and with the knob pointing down that is on. Middle is off. My gasgas has a similar set-up.

Just got back from a weekend of sand blasting with the 525. It POURED down rain on Friday night. Saturday morning-epic riding conditions. Wet sand + new tires and big power=roost galore. Here are some pics. The place we went to is a small riding area on the eastern shore of Md.It is always a sandy, whooped out mess and this weekend was no exception. There is a series of 1-2 mile long sand whoop sections.I had to dial in quite a bit of rebound to get the rear suspension settled. I could go through the whoop sections pretty much tapped in fifth with no swapping or kicking.

I have always ridden hondas, have never been on a YFZ. Rode the KTM this weekend @ Unadilla and after a lap and a half, i couldn't even begin to control my thumb.....severe thumb pump if you will. I'm not sure if it's the angle of the throttle or what. I feel like I am reaching way back to get to it. (towards me) I'm going to try and cut the throttle spring down this week and see what happens. FYI. there are not parts available yet for this thing, however if you have a honda with a precision damper, keep it. It can be modified to fit the KTM very easily, and will save you $$$$

There are different ways to do the mod, check the YFZ sites.

You can probably use a TRX450R thumb throttle as the carb. cables are the same. Or go with a Terry Cable thumb, twist, or thumb/twist combo.

MY solution ...
this is a second lever on the clutch side to activate the regular thumb throttle so i dont get "thumb pump" any more...
i use this for endurance races and XC race plus i will be using this set up for this years baja1000

I think it has more to do with the springs on the carb than the actual throttle assy.

Rode it at the local MX track today and what a great quad. Way too narrow (@ 45") but then again, it isn't called a 525MX. Definitely needs some +2 arms for any serious MX. I'm 6' & 200 and didn't feel cramped at all on it. I did move the bars up just a bit but other than that, it's just the way I picked it up.
So, a Honda thumb throttle housing WILL work with the stock cable? (TRX450?) If so, that's EXACTLY what I have to do. You really do have to extend your thumb WAY back (close to you) and that's what caused my thumb to cramp up.
Awesome quad though. And does anyone know for sure which wires you unplug to get out of the "Soft Mode"?
Has anyone modded the airbox yet?
Anyone tried that JD Jet kit?

I just heard that you can't just switch the throttle housing on these bikes. The wires have to be attached to the switch in the housing. This sends a signal back to the carb and if you just splice them together the bike will not work at all. This sucks because the stock housing is definitely akward at best!!!

Breezewood Proving Grounds.Awsome place to ride. I sold my KTM to Andy L. at DIRTFIRST.He is national #12 GNCC and does a lot of stuff on this site.We have been long time friends and he is switching to KTM for the 2008 race season. If you go to racerxfilms there is a video of him on it at yadkinville. The opening shot shows it in the pit area and the scene with the big drop off is crazy.

carnutvic, just curious why you sold your ktm? the adjustment for the cdi is under the bottom frame rail under the cdi. it is a single brown wire unplugged is hard mode , plugged in is soft mode.

Sup Qikltr. Andy is a long time friend of mine and he really wanted to get some seat time on the ktm before the season ended. I ride both quads and dirt bikes,if i was given a choice I would rather ride the bike.I have a new crf250 that i LOVE. I did buy a new trx450 and i am putting a whole laeger/elka +2 suspension on it.As good as the ktm is-and it is really good-most of the riding I do is on a moto track.I can go harder longer on the bike and do not get beat up as bad.The tables may turn when the suspension package goes on,but I love the bikes plushness and bottoming resistance. The trx has a hrc kit on it and a duncan full system,It is not quite as fast as the ktm,but it does make great power. If you did not know,Andy L. has pro speed on a bike also.In disrict 7 here in Md.,He does the harescrambles on the bike and quad ON THE SAME DAY. He generally wins both classes also. I took his lead years ago and riding a dirt bike makes you a MUCH better quad rider. We were hanging out with the Hetrick racing crew a couple of weeks ago at breezewood and both sons are blistering fast on quads naturally. They were also both riding dirt bikes.(really fast I might add). Riding both tends to keep the hours off both machines, the dirt bikes are pretty bulletproof and in stock trim very capable. You know how a modded quad can be.......

I totally agree that if you want to be a good quad rider, ride a Dirt Bike. I origionally did Dirt Bike MX and when I switched over I won my first race and quickly moved up to the A/Pro-Am class simply because I identified and took advantage of the extra 2 wheels. Cycling/MTB'ing are also very effective training tools. Dam now I miss racing :ermm:
