I picked up my motor "dry" so I need to get some tranny fluid for it. What is the best kind to run? I know what is good stuff with a car but this 250r is mind boggling lol.

the manual recommends 10w40, however everyone on here will recommend you to some good 2 stroke tranny oil, some good brands are amsoil, belray, spectro, honda brand and klots, might cost a little extra but will save u problems in the long run

IMO the thinner the oil the better. i personally like the PJ1 "clutch tuner" super light. altho most draggers in my area run the dextron ATF in the 2 strokes and have great luck with it.

regardless of which you choose, i suggest you stay with it.

I think that ATF is the best but you do have to change it more but at $2 a quart I think its ok . by far the best thing for your clutch and what do you think most light stick trucks use . I was told by a motercycle oil rep.(wont name any brands) that ATF has 3 times the stuff that makes your clutch work as any of the top tranny oils

i started using it recently in the quad i just finished for my 13 year old as a test. so far so good. but i wouldnt reccomend switching in mid stream tho. if switching over i'd go with new fibers. ;)

a tip to save you from burning up your clutch.... you are supposed to let the fibers soak in oil overnight. If it was assembled dry you will roast the clutch in no time....

an I use Mobil 1 75W140 cause Im a rep for M1 and I get it cheap (relatively speaking :D

I've been using ATF for a few years now and it works great but I change it after every race. I buy 2 cases for around $30/40 and it lasts me all summer. For a trail bike I would use something that would last longer, the ATF breaks down quick in the R.

you guys are gonna laugh.... i have used all the thin fluids over the years..... 85 w gear saver .. etc. i have found that regular 10w 40 gives me better clutching and shifting

I aint laughing. I've got an 88 250r with the original clutches in it. Its had 20w-50 Castrol in it since new. I MXed it every Saturday night for 5 or 6 years and took it hillclimbing/trail riding a few times.

red rooster just so you know. the cr500 springs are LIGHTER then the R springs because the cr500 has 6 springs and the trx has 5........

I run amsoil dominator oil, its by far one of the best...One of my motors was WOT for 80 hours in glamis(9 1/2 days in glamis cali) and it blew due to a cracked piston skirt.

regardless if it blew or not not sure if other oils could go that long.

also, I run lucas 75w-80wt synthetic gear oil. I have run all other oils and atf and ive stuck with the lucas. After dissassembly on a a few trannies ive noticed that the lucas is superior to most. most oils i ran I would get burn marks on the gears and shafts. not with the lucas though.

clutch feel with it is aweosme too. and the oil last a LONG TIME..

its expensive but is amazing.

To me, choosing an oil based on your clutch is backwards. Kinda like those people that like to downshift in their cars to slow down in order to save the brakes. Last I checked in cars, brakes were a whole lot cheaper than clutches and trannies.

I'm going to choose an oil that is best for my TRANNY, not my clutch. I can replace my clutch ten times for the cost it will take to do my tranny once.
