How long was the balancer bearing bearing making noise before this happened?

Nope, they put all those teeth on there so if you rip a few off you'll have spares.

I got to admit, first time I ever seen that happen on a R engine.

First off, you need to pull that side of the engine down to check the cases & make sure none of those teeth flying around busted the case. Next, you know you will have to buy a new balancer & crank gear or maybe find those two pieces used somewhere.

While your doing all that, need to check & see why the damage happened in the first place. Like I say, never seen that happen & it would mean probably both bearing would have had to lock up at the same time or something got in between the gears for it to start shearing teeth off like that.

I've seen bearings worn completely out & then come apart & still not sheer the teeth off a gear.
You need to inspect that clutch side real close for a bolt or something out of place.
Could have even been a tooth off a transmission gear got into the clutch side & caused that to happen.

Not the only thing that could have happened. Notice the scratches on the plate behind the balancer. They are in the direction of the crank gear. The crank gear has either been up against the plate or something got between the crank gear and plate and came around with it. Could have been one tooth from either gear. With as little as one tooth being broke off from either gear got everything outta whack and balance and with every rotation after that things just got worse. If that sucker was still running, and I guess it was for you to listen to the grinding noise, it had to be doing some shaking around.

The noise was only for about 2 seconds as soon as I herd it I shut it off.
I plan on pulling off my clutch and inspecting all over in there.

Thanks for your help

i'm with neil. in all my day i've never seen an R engine do that although i have had a clutch arm bearing go and have one of the needle bearings make its way to the balancer and crank gear, wedging in the bottom "valley" causing a lose of a tooth from both gears.

at this point i would tear the whole engine down and inspect EVERYTHING.
