Are you getting a brand new one or a used one. If it is used has anything thing been done yet. Also you didnt even get it yet but you want to make it faster? Why not just get yourself a 450.

exhaust
jetting
air filter
if u ride in a lot of dusty places go to www.sparksracing.com and buy the airfilter package thing. if not go n e ware like www.magicracing.com
you can find exhaust there too. jetting... dynojets are the most popular. you can find all this at magicracing.

yea sorry i posted something in the yz 450 forum here ill copy it
hey guys i just wanted to ask around and see what u thought about this...im 16 and hopefully depending on the school year next summer i will be able to get a sport bike. currently i just have a utility 400. i have ridden many gear shifters but none with clutch. my cousin has ridden a trx 400 and a yfz 450. he told me to start with the trx 400 but im really interested in the yfz 450 and possibly starting to race however i ususally just ride trails and open fields. my cousin said the yfz is also a lot of maintenance.
so i was just wondering what u guys thought i should do start with a trx400 or the yfz 450 and would it too much power and maintenance?

Im not really sure what kinnd of riding youre into but to be honest id say do suspension first. You'll be able to go faster b/c the bike is more controllable. You'll be glad you did this first.;)

But if you're into straight up draggin' then ya, a pipe, filter, and jetting would be a good place to start.

my brother is 16 and he rides a trx 450. Id say just get a 450 cause in about 6 months of having the 400 youll want something faster

listen 450's are great. but they are a lot of maintnance. 400's are great and anot so much maintnance. yes if u get a 400 and break something or it runs u dry of cash u r going to complain and say u should have got a 450 but you no u like the 400. if u r going to race get a 450. if u ride trails fields and occational race... get the 400. flauge said if u r doing mx do suspension... if u r not doing mx dont worry so much about it. basic slip on foam filter and jet kit will make you happy. and maybe i high comp piston (11:1) and a stage 2 hotcam overtime. :)
