just make sure its 4 stroke motorcycle oil and i would recomend synthetic if you can find it. It really does make a difference.

ditto. i prefer mobil 1 fully synthetic 20w50 motorcyle oil for summer months and the same in 10w40 for colder weather. with how hot ex's get, oil is important.

10w 40 works fine for me but yes synthetic disapates heat better than regular oil

put simple 20w50 is thicker than 10w40. thicker oil is usually used in hotter conditions. thinner oil in colder.

as far as what oil i run, i run Amsoil 10w40 fully synthetic.

After a lot of studying, I run 20-50 (automotive) in both my ex's. the 40 or 50 weight class oils do not have the friction modifiers that the 30 wt class automotive oils have and so do not cause problems with wet clutches. The 400 has rocker arms that are prone to heat damage (I've been told) and the 50 wt helps keep them cooler and better lubricated in hot climes, like the SoCal desert where I always ride.

Oil is a very controversial subject, and everybody has an opinion. I've read enough technical information on the subject that I believe that my suggestions are beyond reproach by 'opinion'. I'll be glad to post a couple of technical references, if anybody's interested.

Amsoil products and Rotella synthetic 5-40 is supposed to be quite good for motorcycles, and I've been using the Rotella in my Raptor 660, very happily. I may try it in my 400ex's too. It's about $14 a gallon at Wallmart, so it's relatively inexpensive and convenient, too!

Bottom line, just use good quality oil, free of friction modifiers (make sure they DON'T say 'energy conserving'), and not the cheap smurf, and you should be fine.
