Like the guy above me said, if it was even in decent condition, that would be a great price! That thing looks pretty beat, though....even for that price, you definately wouldn't be getting off good at all. I would be worried that after the first ride the engine would be toast.

In this game, you usually get what you pay for. Just keep that in mind when making a decision.

the price is what makes me suspecious, that sounds too good to be true....

if i were you i would get on that bike, and inspect it throughly,

i just have a feeling that that guy knows something, and your gonna find out the hard way....

but i could be wrong.. if all checks out ok i would say jump on it....

engine looks like a ball of mud lol

u should be able to find a like new 04-05 for a little over 3k.

The work alone that thing would need would put u past 3k.
The tires it needs alone would cost u a few hundred

I wouldn't touch it.

yea tell the guy to powerwash/clean the bike amazingly, then you go and inspect everything on it. it looks REALLY beat in those pics

A quad like that makes you wonder: How well did they take care of the air filter? How often was the oil changed? A stock 400EX can handle neglect with aplomb. A 450r isn't the kind of engine to take kindly to whatever use made it look like that. Those pictures are terrible and it STILL looks beat up.

If it started ran, and moved, I would buy it without thinking twice.:o

I dont think its worth it. It looks like its in horrible shape and i got a 04 with a hrc kit and was in like brand new condition for $3400 earlier this year. Might as well spend the extra money and get a whole lot nicer quad with some mods done to it.

With a motor rebuild on that 05, it would come out cheaper than $3400 and it would have a fresh motor...

I suppose if I knew nothing about rebuilding motors it probably wouldn't be worth it, but if you are then just buy it and rebuild it.

Alright...how much is it to bore and put a new piston in one of these beasts?

The piston itself is around $150 for a stock style replacement.

Then labor, honing or boring and gaskets...

itll probly end up around 300-400.

Thats one thing down.

NOW, for the ball joints, tie rod ends, wheels that look like shooting range targets, chain, sprockets, clutch, whatever else worn out in the engine, brakes... no one can confirm whats wrong with it, hell the guy just may want it gone.

But 9 times out of 10, people sell things because their tired of messing with it. If it was a joy for him owning it, why would he sell it for $2500? Your probably buying his problems.

Only way to find out is to go look at it. Take it on a test ride. Listen to the engine.

Yeah and you have to wonder about the "valve adjusting" thing too.

If all it truly needed was a valve adjustment to run mint again, why would the guy risk having his price drop by 4 or 5 hundred bucks when it would only take a couple hours of work?

And tires don't get worn like that on trail rides.. that guy liked riding road and/or pulling burnouts.

THOROUGHLY inspect a quad such as that one before even thinking about laying cash down.

It probably needs a valve job. I just did mine. I did everything in the head, a timing chain and piston and rings. I did the labor myself and it cost about $620.

I want to know how you guys can tell it is ragged out from the crummy dark pictures. It looks like to me it was riddin an the street. That is why the tires are bald.

you can bald a tire like that real quick in a week or two because of riding on the pavement or riding real hard in the dirt but overall I think its a rip off

My thoughts exactly.

Who says it needs to be bored and a new piston? I highly doubt it... maybe a new piston at most, these cylinders are pretty tough. The wheels look like hell because they're probably spray painted... blast that paint off and they probably look like every other stock wheel. Tires are shot no doubt about it... but honestly how many of you guys even run stock tires? To me buying a quad cheap with beat up parts that you are probably going to replace anyways makes more sense than spending $5k on a clean one that you are gonna strip down and put all aftermarket stuff on and never even look at the stock parts again...

and if this thing is as beat as you guys say it is... a little motor work MAYBE, and then if other parts are that beat, stock parts go dirt cheap on here and ebay.

I still say its more than worth it if it runs and drives, and Im standing by that.

Only thing I don't like about buying bikes like that is you don't know if the oil or air filter was ever cleaned. If the engine is kept that dirty, I doubt anything else has been maintained.
Running super old oil and getting sand in there can turn that entire engine into a time bomb. Especially the bottom end bearings.
