I'm getting ready to do a cam swap on my 400ex. Pretty simple process, but after reading the Hot Cams instructions I had a question. They say to change the oil right after everything is bolted back up. The when it is started the first time run it for like 30 minutes abouve 3000rpm's with no idling. Ok, but, the 400ex has an oil resevoir and if I completely drain the motor of oil how do I refill it? What have y'all done?

When you change oil on a 400ex you drain the engine and oil resevoir. You refill the resevoir with around 1.25qrts of oil, start the motor for about 30 seconds, shut it off, and put in the last .75qrt of oil (the resevoir won't hold the entire 2 qrts). So, if upon initial startup the quad is supposed to run for 30 minutes, do I just run it with as much oil as I can get in the resevoir, or ???

oh, i see what your saying..

well i dont know off hand what the 400ex's maximum oil capacity is,, but i would try to get as close to that as you can in the oil tank

Pour some oil over the head before installing the valve cover.

Oil capacity is right around 2 qrts (I believe 1.95 on regular change and 2.2 after rebuild).

Who else? I know someone on here has swapped out the cam on a 400ex...

If you fill the reservoir and let it sit for a while (15 minutes maybe?) the oil should slowly drain out of the reservoir and into the crankcase. Then you can finish adding the full oil capacity into the reservoir.

If you check that the oil level is correct with the old oil, drain it, and then measure how much drained out you can refill with that amount of fresh oil. That way you can get the correct amount in there without having to go through the normal oil change routine.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that it would flow from the resevoir to the motor on its own. I will try that. I know it was a stupid question, but it had me wondering...

Will a stage 1 HotCam make that much of a difference? My 400ex has a full Yoshi exhaust, K&N filter, no lid, 14 tooth front sprocket. Will the cam affect my jetting much?
