I have a set of elkas and pep long travel shocks. Both are from my old 250r. They are in great shape. I want to put the elkas on my 400ex for a motocross race this weekend. I switched out one side just to see if they would work, but It looks like there compressing to much and will bottom out soon. Are these suppose to do this, or is it just not possible to switch the shocks without a re-valve.

Let me start by saying the best way to get the maximum performance from your suspension set up is to have the shocks valved and sprung for the specific rider and quad. With that said, I have switched shocks from a 250r to a 400ex in the past with no problems. The 400ex weighs a bit more, but it didn't really affect the shocks that much. Of course the a-arms need to be similar. For example, the shocks I switched out were on a stndard travel 250r with +2 a-arms and were put on a standard travel 400ex with +2 a-arms.

Do you have long travel a-arms on the 400ex? If not I doubt the shocks will work as you mentioned the shocks were for a long travel 250r. If you have LT a-arms on the 400ex, I would think things would work okay. The added weight of the 400ex might make them a little softer.

I'm no shock expert, but these are my thoughts. Others may chime in a set me straight.

the 250r had +3 houser long travel arms, and the 400ex has +3 houser long travel arms.

I would think it would be okay. There is one way to find out.:D If you try it, let me know the results. Good luck.
