a local shop has a 04 for $4400, it was a kid that works theres buddy and said he rode it maybe 5 times. theres no scratches on the right side of the case or on the frame from boots so it deff wasnt used much. has a bullhorn bumper, frame skid plate and full hmf ballance carbon fiber exhaust, and kenda claws in the back.

my main concern is the crank bearings. i've read on here that its only on late 04's and 05's so below what vin number should be safe?

is $4400 a good deal?

If it was hardly used and very clean than 4000 isnt bad at all. All 04/05 eventually throw the lower rod bearing. The more mods the faster it happens. you have to expect/plan for it at some point in the engines life.

I know with my 450R i have two engines now. when one blows i throw in the running one and fix the other and vice versa. Only way not to have down time.

If it does happen and doesn't take anything else out the new updated crank from honda is only $200.

That's WAY TOO MUCH for my area. That would be lucky to bring $3500. My friend just bought 2 used 06s in the last 3 months. He paid $4300 & $4000.

well i found another one today, an 05 for $3500. has aftermarket bumper, frame skid plate, itp front tires, maxxis 2 rear tires, dg pipe (which is ridiculously loud), uni filter with no air box lid, taper bars, and a higher compression piston. i asked the guy about the crank bearings and he said he never had a problem. and when the motor was rebuilt for the higher compression piston the mechanics didn't find anything wrong with them. oil changed regularly and air filter washed after every ride. he also has all stock parts and has all the reciepts which he claims total to $11,000.

ell all i can say is go with the one that suits you more but personally for me id turn that dude down that has the 05 when the terms "higher compression piston" and "motor rebuild" came into play because ive learned the hard way that its just 50/50 on how long itll last with major motor mods, instead of taking that chance id rather pay a little more for that basically stock 04 for the reliability.

id say just keep looking and dont jump on the first one ya see. the one for 4400 sounds way too expensive and id try to stay away from one with motor work already done. I know around here most 06's in stock form are goin for like 4200-4500

I wouldn't let my 04 go for anything less than 8Gs..I have about 18Gs into it and have taken care of it.4Gs is cheap..

My 04 blew up - have extended warranty. The bearings let loose - Honda paid $1200 worth off parts & labor - but I still needed trans gears, piston & cylinder (not covered) - I added the HRC kit & 77 days later my quads ready for pickup. I gotta pay $1550 & I 'm gonna do the clutch (more money) Your $4400 buck is to much no matter how little its been used. You should expect it to blow up & you'll be paying another $1600 on a rebuild. Go luck. For 6000 bucks ,go buy a new one & make a few payment - I went & bought an 07ER from Burger's so I wasn't w/o a ride for that long

thanks for the replys guys. buying new has always been on my mind also, saw a red 08 in at the dealer and it looked pretty sweet lol. the only thing holding me back is the money situation seeing college is starting up again ill be working less. but its a real toss up for me on what to do is cause i ride mostly trails. another option i was thinking about was buying a junk 400ex and slowly rebuilding it making a quad that would suit me perfect and just buying the parts as i get the money.
